Captains to Host CAC Baseball Championship Series Versus Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday & Friday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-seeded Christopher Newport baseball team will host a best-of-three title series to determine the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference Champions, welcoming in the fourth-seeded Penn State Harrisburg Lions on Thursday and Friday of this week. The conference announced the schedule change Monday afternoon to account for potential poor weather as well as the Commencement Exercises set for Saturday morning. Captains Park will play host to the first game at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 before game two and an "if necessary" game three set to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 10.

Both teams won their respective CAC pods last weekend as Christopher Newport won all three games they played against York (Pa.) and Mary Washington. Penn State Harrisburg went on the road to defeat Salisbury University twice to eliminate the sixth-ranked Sea Gulls and bestow hosting rights onto the Captains for the first time since joining the league in 2013-14.

Christopher Newport is vying for it's first ever Capital Athletic Conference Championship and the program's first league title since winning the USA South Athletic Conference in 2012. Behind the most potent scoring offense in program history, the Captains are 33-6 overall, marking just the sixth time CNU has eclipsed 30 wins in a single season. Along the way, CNU passed 800 wins as a program and 500 wins under head coach John Harvell, who is looking to guide the Captains back to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time.

The Captains set a new program record for runs in a season after three dominant wins in the tournament's opening weekend. Senior Jordan Mason tied the program career hits record, with 225, and senior Ryan Grubbs continues to carry his impressive nationwide leading on-base percentage well above .600 with a .631 mark.

Penn State Harrisburg will be playing in the CAC Championship Series for the second straight year under head coach Ryan Brown. The Lions have posted the finest season in program history with a 31-11-1 and are also looking to secure the program's first CAC Championship. They will also be playing for their first league title since 2013 when the Lions earned the NEAC Championship and the program's first and only NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Lions are led by veterans Bret Williams, Miguel Torres, and Travis Van Houten. Williams is hitting .428 with 32 extra-base hits and 58 RBI while Torres is also hitting over .400 with 18 extra-base hits and 47 runs scored. Van Houten leads the nation in RBI this season with 67 while hitting .383 while smacking 12 doubles, 5 triples, and 11 home runs.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all the action from Captains Park on Thursday and Friday. Links can be found at CNUsports.com. Admission to the games will be $5 for adults and $3 for children.
