2019 Volleyball Schedule
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport volleyball team will face a challenging slate in 2019 as the Captains are scheduled to square off with 10 reigning NCAA Tournament participants, including all four National Semifinalists from 2018, as CNU looks to qualify for its 13th straight postseason bid.
                                 Â
The 2019 schedule features a bout with reigning NCAA champion Emory on September 6 as well as early season tests against fellow Final Four squads Calvin, Juniata, and Wisconsin Eau-Claire. Overall, six of Christopher Newport's matches will come against squads that finished last year ranked in the AVCA National Coaches Poll.
Â
CNU's season opens with an exciting group of matches during the Captains Classic in August. Kicking off the year at the Freeman Center, Christopher Newport will begin the season with a twin bill against Wisconsin Eau-Claire and Juniata on August 30. Both squads bowed out in the National Semifinals last season. The following afternoon, on August 31, the team will wrap up its home stand against Marymount, who also reached the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
Â
After opening the year at home, the Captains will travel to four tournaments during September. Kicking off the trips, CNU will head to Georgia for the Berry College Tournament from September 6-7. Along with a skirmish against the hosts, who reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, Christopher Newport will also face Emory, Endicott, and Mary Hardin-Baylor during the two-day stand. Emory claimed the program's second national title in 2018, while Mary Hardin-Baylor reached the Regional Finals.
Â
Returning north, the Captains will head to Pennsylvania for the first of two tournaments in the middle of September. First, CNU will trek to Messiah on September 13-14. Along with the Falcons, CNU will face Calvin and Messiah. Calvin was dispatched by Emory in the national championship match last season.
Â
After a brief stop at home on September 17 for a contest against William Peace, Christopher Newport will head back to the Keystone State for a tournament at Neumann. The team will face a doubleheader against Hood and Neumann on September 20 before taking on Widener and Catholic the following day.
Â
Capping off the early invitationals, CNU will trek to Washington, D.C. for the Gallaudet Tournament on September 27-28 for showdowns with York (Pa.), Bethany, and Catholic.
Â
In October, Christopher Newport will face the heart of the Capital Athletic Conference slate. After a trip to Southern Virginia on October 2, the Captains will host Mary Washington on October 5 and St. Mary's (Md.) on October 9. Following a quick jaunt to Salisbury on October 12, CNU will face the back half of the home-and-home schedule in 2019. Trips to Mary Washington (October 19) and St. Mary's (Md.) (October 23) will break up home games against Southern Virginia (October 16) and York (Pa.) (October 25).
Â
Closing out the regular season at home, the Captains will welcome Washington & Lee to town on October 26 before hosting the CNU Invitational beginning on November 1. In addition to a conference clash with Salisbury to kick off the tournament, Christopher Newport will host Virginia Wesleyan and Averett in a non-conference doubleheader on November 2.
Â
The Capital Athletic Conference Tournament will open three days later on November 5 with the Championship Match scheduled for November 9.
Â
CNU is coming off of a 2018 campaign that saw the team post a 26-6 record while claiming the CAC Championship. Eventually, the Captains reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before finishing the year receiving votes in the national poll.
