LYNCHBURG, Va. -- For the first time in program history, three Captains collected first-team All-State honors as
Scott McAneney,
Dylan Rice, and
Max Wayne earned top plaudits from the Virginia Sports Information Directors after putting together decorated campaigns for the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team.
The All-State award marks the second career VaSID honor for each of the three standouts. All three were second-team selections in 2018. Meanwhile, with their accolades, Rice and Wayne are the first Captains in school history to earn All-Virginia nods during each of their first two collegiate campaigns.
McAneney starred between the pipes throughout 2019. Orchestrating one of the finest years in program history, he shattered the single-season school record with 243 saves. Meanwhile, his .580 save percentage also established a new program record and marked the finest rate by a Capital Athletic Conference goalie since 2016.
Suffocating the opposition throughout the year, the Paoli, Pennsylvania native registered 16 double-digit save efforts and led all CAC goalies with 12 caused turnovers. During the year, he made 19 stops against both Southern Virginia and Mary Washington, which equaled the third-highest single-game total in school history. Meanwhile, he also came through with 18 saves and allowed just a single goal during a highlight-reel victory against nationally-ranked Roanoke on February 27.
After being named the VaSID All-State Rookie of the Year in 2018, Rice continued to build his résumé with a fantastic follow-up season. As a sophomore, he snapped off 52 goals, which marked the third-highest single-season total in program history. His 70 total points also placed him fourth on Christopher Newport's all-time charts.
Tormenting opposing defenses, the Mechanicsville native fired 17 multi-goal efforts and had at least one point in 18 of his 19 appearances. Consistently effective, he scored eight straight hat-tricks from February 27 through March 23, including battles against three nationally-ranked opponents. His finest showcase came during a seven-point eruption at Catholic on March 15, while he also added six tallies during an impressive postseason performance against Mary Washington in the CAC Tournament on April 27.
Rounding out the honorees, Wayne was a lockdown defender during a sensational sophomore season. Anchoring the back line, the second-year standout forced 51 turnovers, which ranked second in the CAC and placed him third on the program's all-time single-season list. Effective in all facets of the game, he also stood second among conference defensemen with 52 ground balls.
Blanketing the field throughout the year, the Ashburn native forced at least one turnover in 16 appearances and had three or more on 11 occasions. His high watermark came against Virginia Wesleyan when he notched seven caused turnovers, equaling the third-highest single-game total in program history. He also caused six miscues twice during the year and was named the CAC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on March 18 and a USILA National Team of the Week selection on March 26.
Along with their All-State accolades, McAneney, Rice, and Wayne all picked up honorable mention USILA All-American honors last month. Meanwhile, McAneney was a first-team All-Conference selection, while Rice and Wayne were second-team picks.
