Christopher Newport Junior Riley Cook Named National Player of the Week by United Soccer Coaches

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Following another record-setting performance on the field for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team, junior scoring leader Riley Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) has been named the United Soccer Coaches Division III Women's Soccer National Player of the Week.

Cook was earlier named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career after posting another banner performance on the offensive side of the ball for Christopher Newport. The junior forward scored all four of Christopher Newport's goals this week against Mary Hardin-Baylor and then 23rd-ranked Trinity University (Texas).

Last season, Gabby Gillis became the first player in program history to haul in the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week accolades and with Tuesday's selection, Cook joins her in elite company. She was one of eight players, male and female, to earn national distinction from the coaches association this week.

Leading the potent Captains attack, Cook scored in each half against Mary Hardin-Baylor before logging a pair of goals in a 42-second span in the second half against the nationally-ranked Tigers. During the week, several records went down including one of the biggest marks in program history as Cook became the Captains' all-time leading goal scorer with her 48th career goal to pass former leader Emma O'Reilly. She also set the school record for fastest consecutive goals scored by the same player with her 42 second burst, and became just the third player to eclipse the 100-point plateau in her career.

With two game-winning goals, Cook also extended her own program record for winners and now has 20 for her career. Among the entirety of the NCAA, including Division I, II, and III, Cook ranks in the top 20 of active players in career goals, points, goals per game, and points per game. She currently ranks 17th among all active players in career points and third among all non-seniors with 107 career points.

Cook and the rest of the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team will return to action on Wednesday, September 25 to host the University of Lynchburg at 6:00 pm.
