FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- A trio of All-American former Captains will be inducted into the USA South Athletic Conference Hall of Fame this year as men's basketball standout Antoine Sinclair, golf national champion Scott Scovil, and football star Rob Rodriguez have been selected by the conference.
Sinclair concluded his career as a top-five scorer and rebounder for the Captains, Scovil was a three-time All-American, and Rodriguez was a first team All-American as a multi-position star for the football program. The Christopher Newport trio will be recognized aside Greensboro College women's tennis star Carrie Pacifico, Averett University multi-sport athlete Amy Cross, and Methodist administrator and coach Bob McEvoy.Â
The USA South will officially honor and recognize the 2020 induction class during a ceremony on the campus of Greensboro College on Monday, June 1. It is the 11th group inducted into the league's Hall of Fame. Rodriguez, Scovil, and Sinclair will be the 12th, 13th, and 14th Captains inducted into the USA South Hall of Fame. They will join
Matt Kelchner (Football), Eric Shulman (Men's Tennis),
Lindsay Birch (Volleyball), Abby Hogge (Volleyball), Chelsie Schweers (Women's Basketball), Steve Artis (Men's Basketball), Bev Vaughan (Administrator), C.J. Woollum (Coach/Administrator), Wayne Block (Administrator), Karen Barefoot (Women's Basketball), and Lamont Strothers (Men's Basketball).Â
During his time patrolling the defensive backfield for Christopher Newport, Rodriguez established himself as one of the finest defensive players in league history. He is the Captains' all-time leader on special teams with over 1,000 kick return yards on 134 attempts while also ranking among the best in Division III history with 10 career blocked kicks. Rodriguez still holds the USA South Athletic Conference and Christopher Newport records for career kickoff return average (26.9). On the defensive side of the ball, Rodriguez still holds the career record for pass breakups and ranks second in career interceptions with 9. He ranks in the top five in consecutive games played, with 42, and still ranks in the top-ten all-time in total tackles with 156.Â
Rodriguez was a first team All-American selection by both the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com following a standout 2006 season. He also earned preseason All-American honors from D3football.com and participated in the Aztec Bowl before playing for Team USA. He is a two-time All-Region selection as a defensive back and a six-time All-Conference selection as both a return specialist and defensive back.Â
Scott Scovil is the only Christopher Newport athlete outside of track & field to win an individual national championship and was just the second male to accomplish the feat in Captains athletics history in any sport. He won the 1994 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship by two strokes after finishing the 72-hole tournament with a program record 289 (71-75-72-71). He still holds the record and the second finest performance in the national championship event and qualified for the event three times in his career. Scovil is the all-time record holder for tournament victories in a single season (6) and for his career (9). He finished his playing career as the Captains' all-time leader in scoring average for a season and career and still ranks in the top-ten.Â
In addition to his national title, Scovil was a three-time All-American and All-Conference performer while competing at Christopher Newport. He was inducted into the Christopher Newport Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 for his stellar performance on the course during his career. Scovil helped lead Christopher Newport to the team's finest team performance at nationals in 1996 when the Captains finished 9th out of 23 teams at the Saratoga Spa State Park Course in New York. Scovil finished 7th with a 293 (73-76-72-72) in that event.Â
Rounding out this year's inductions for Christopher Newport is Antoine Sinclair, a two-time All-American while a member of the Christopher Newport men's basketball squad from 1998 to 2001. He is one of just four players in Conference history to be named Player of the Year twice as he accomplished the feat in 2000 an 2001 to go alone with a Rookie of the Year honor in 1998. A three-time All-Conference and All-Tournament selection, he was also the Conference Tournament MVP three times as the Captains won four league championships in his tenure. Sinclair collected District Player of the Year honors from the NABC in 2001 and was a first team All-District selection twice.Â
One of only three players in program history to total more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career, he finished his career ranked fourth in scoring (1,736 points) and second in rebounding (1,031 rebounds). He still ranks third in rebounding and seventh in scoring while checking in at 7th in career blocked shots (181). His 26 rebounds in a game still stands as the single-game record after he tied the mark on February 26, 1999 against Averett. His jersey number (#2) was retired and Sinclair went on to play professionally in England and Germany.Â
The USA South Athletic Conference Hall of Fame was established in 2010 and the 2020 class marks the 11th induction class. The six new inductees will bring the Hall of Fame to 63 total members.Â
