NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A pair of Christopher Newport outfielders collected first team All-State accolades on Tuesday afternoon as the Virginia Sports Information Directors announced senior
Trey Hicks and junior
Conner Clark to the 2020 College Division All-State team.
Hicks earned first team All-State honors for the second year in a row while Clark picked up his first career certificate.
Entering his final season, Hicks picked up D3baseball.com Preseason All-American plaudits and through the first 14 games of the season, lived up to that billing. He was named to the National Team of the Week as well as Conference Player of the Week on March 10 after hitting .600 with seven extra-base hits in four wins for the Captains. During that sensational week, Hicks hit for the cycle against New England College, becoming just the fourth player in CNU baseball history to accomplish the feat.
Hicks hit .453 with a team-high four home runs, 18 RBI, and 11 extra-base hits. When the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the remainder of the season, Hicks concluded his season slugging .830 and ranked in the top-30 nationally in total bases (15th), home runs (17th), and RBI (28th). He was riding an eight-game hitting streak at the conclusion of the season with six multi-hit performances and was hitless only twice in the Captains' 14 games played.
While Hicks started every game in right field,
Conner Clark played off his right shoulder in center. The junior left-handed lead-off man was off to a spectacular start in his third year when the season was cancelled. He ranked in the top-five nationally among players with at least 50 at-bats by hitting .483 through the Captains' 14 games. Clark was named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week and CAC Player of the Week on March 16 after going 5-for-7 in a 20-12 win at Bridgewater in what would prove to be the final game of the season.
The Christopher Newport center fielder ranked second nationally in total runs scored (25) while also ranking eighth in hits, 11th in stolen bases, and 26th in doubles. He currently ranks second among active Division III players in career stolen bases and eighth among players at all three NCAA divisions. He reached base in all 14 games this season and picked up at least one hit in 13 of 14 contests, including a ten-game hitting streak that will carry into next season.
