Christopher Newport Athletics Names Robert Kearn Head Athletic Trainer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics Kyle McMullin has announced the hiring of Robert Kearn as the Head Athletic Trainer.

Kearn returns to Newport News to lead the Sports Medicine staff after having served two years in the Assistant Athletic Trainer role from 2017-19. He then took a position with the Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J. for the 2019-20 season.

"It is a pleasure to welcome Rob Kearn back to Christopher Newport," McMullin said. "This is a very important period for our student-athletes to focus attention on their medical well-being. Rob's talents, knowledge, and versatility make him an outstanding choice to lead our efforts in this area. He is an outstanding clinician, has a great understanding of our programs, and is well respected by student-athletes and staff."

Kearn has been a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association since 2015 and is NATABOC certified. While earning his Master of Science in Athletic Training from Seton Hall University, Kearn worked with Rutgers University, the NFL's New York Giants and West Point football.

Following his tenure in New Jersey, Kearn moved to Newport News to assist the Captains efforts as an assistant athletic trainer for football, as well as men's and women's basketball. His role included developing and implementing rehab protocols, referrals to proper health care providers and supervisor for student workers and schedules. In 2019, he moved on to the Delbarton School where he provided treatment for all 17 sports as the assistant athletic trainer and rehab coordinator.

Kearn received his Bachelor's Degree from Virginia Tech in 2014.
