From NCAA Championships to record-setting individual accomplishments, the Christopher Newport athletic department has seen some of its finest moments during the winter season. While the Captains eagerly anticipate adding more chapters to our storied history with the return of intercollegiate competition, our friends at TowneBank have teamed up with CNUsports.com to spend some time reliving a few of the legendary efforts and memorable accomplishments from our past. Each week over the next three months, we will look back at the anniversary of seven events that helped shape our historic winter sports programs.

January 4, 1973 - Men's Basketball
Handing Hampton its most lopsided setback of the season, the Christopher Newport men's basketball team capitalized on a well-balanced effort to upend its local rival, 72-62, at Ratcliffe Gymnasium. Four Captains finished in double-figures, including a team-high 16 points from senior Paul Babcock. Carl Farris also contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards, while Steve Laxton added 14 points and a highlight-reel full-court assist to Sherwin Green late in the second half. Meanwhile, Dave Hutcheson also came through with 14 points and 12 boards while helping the Captains register their second straight victory over the Pirates.
 
January 5, 1991 - Men's Basketball
Adding another chapter to his illustrious athletic career, senior John Harvell pieced together an epic performance to lead the Christopher Newport men's basketball team to a 101-96 triumph over St. John Fisher during the first round of the Marymount Invitational in Arlington. A starting outfielder on the Captains' baseball team and former All-Conference football player at Howard University, Harvell showed off on the hardwood with a career-high 18 points, including seven in overtime. After National Player of the Year Lamont Strothers fouled out of the contest, Harvell stepped up and took control while converting the team's only three field goals in the extra session to cap off the marathon victory. In addition to Harvell's heroics, Strothers finished with a game-high 29 points, while sophomores Steve Artis and James Boykins added 21 apiece.
 
January 6, 2016 - Women's Basketball
In Bill Broderick's 100th game on the sidelines at Christopher Newport, the women's basketball team marked the milestone with a fitting performance while racing past Penn St. Harrisburg, 75-48, at the Capital Union Building in Middletown, Pennsylvania. Forcing the Lions to commit 24 turnovers, the Captains orchestrated another defensive showcase, including three steals by both Makenzie Fancher and Zhara Tannor. On the other end of the court, Anitra Thomas threw down 14 points, while freshman Jessica Daguilh added a breakthrough performance with eight boards and a season-high 13 points, including six in the fourth quarter to cap off the triumph.
 
January 7, 1997 - Men's Basketball
In one of the wildest finishes in program history, the Christopher Newport men's basketball team stunned Division II Virginia State, 86-84, during a road tilt in Ettrick. Battling back from an 11-point deficit late in the second half, the Captains knotted the score with 34 seconds remaining in regulation on a three-pointer by Jeff McLean. Trading long-range daggers, the Trojans responded before Mike Holland returned the favor with another three to even the score at 84 with less than five seconds left. Incredibly, on the inbounds play, the Trojans were caught slipping a sixth player onto the floor, which earned a technical foul. Taking the shots, Holland drained one-of-two to snatch Christopher Newport's first lead. Seconds later, after the hosts fouled on another inbounds play, McLean eventually hit one of his two free throws to ice the victory and finish with a game-high 27 points. Holland also added 16 points, while Matt Bryant finished with 19. 
 
January 8, 1994 - Track & Field
Entering the year with high expectations, the Christopher Newport men's track & field team kicked off the 1994 indoor campaign with an incredible showing as two Captains punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships with a remarkable run in the 55-meters at the East Coast Invitational in Richmond. Freshman Calvin Bunch starred in the race after crossing the line in 6.47. That effort just edged out teammate David Bullock, who finished in 6.50. Both of those clockings eclipsed the NCAA qualifying standard and earned the two standouts a spot at the title meet. In addition to the sprinters, sophomore Mike Boucher won the hurdles in 7.80, while Rich Schugeld took the two-mile run in 9:50. On the women's side, junior Vandisha Wilder improved her own national qualifying time in the 55-meters with a 7.33 clocking.
 
January 9, 1987 - Women's Basketball
Setting a new single-game scoring standard, senior All-American Pam Stewart orchestrated one of the most dominant efforts in Christopher Newport women's basketball history after guiding the Captains to an 86-34 victory over Averett in Danville. Posting the school's first 40-point effort, Stewart finished with nearly half of the team's total after depositing 41 against the Cougars. She shot 19-for-25 from the field, which also shattered the school and conference records for field goals in a game. Consistent throughout the contest, she went off for 21 points in the first half before canning her final bucket on a short jumper with 3:40 left in regulation to set the scoring record.
 
January 10, 1986 - Men's Basketball
For the first time in 14 years, the Christopher Newport men's basketball program sported a new name at the top of the all-time scoring charts as Buck Moore broke the career points record during an 87-62 victory over Methodist at Ratcliffe Gymnasium. With 3:22 left in regulation, Moore stepped to the line and sank a pair of free throws to push past Bobby Arnette's career record of 1,259 points, which had stood since 1972. Moore eventually finished the contest with a game-high 25 points. Mark Bryson also stuffed the stat sheet, finishing two blocks shy of a triple-double. The sophomore contributed 14 rebounds, 11 points, and eight rejections, while Broderick Roye added 13 points as well.
