Mauri Ware and Marcella Sabbagh Secure Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Weekly Field Hockey Honors

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Mauri Ware and Marcella Sabbagh swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Field Hockey Athlete of the Week awards after the two standouts guided Christopher Newport to a pair of historic efforts last week.

Ware was celebrated as the Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Captains with nine points, including four goals, during the squad's two victories. Meanwhile, Sabbagh picked up the Defensive Player of the Week honor after guiding the program to a pair of shutouts while chipping in on both ends of the field.

The weekly awards were the second for both stars. Ware was previously celebrated as the top offensive player on September 2, 2019, while Sabbagh collected the defensive honor on September 9, 2019.

Anchoring the attack during the week, Ware was a dominant presence on the offensive side of the ball. In a 4-0 victory at Mary Washington on Tuesday, she deposited the game's first two strikes, which marked her third multi-goal effort of the season. Her first dagger was also her team-leading third game-winning goal of the year.

On Sunday, Ware came back with another lethal assault against Sewanee in Raleigh, North Carolina. Picking up right where she left off, the Hayes, Virginia native matched her career-high with five points, including her fourth multi-goal showcase of the season. After assisting on the game's opening tally during the 9-0 win, she erupted for two goals in the second quarter. Incredibly, her rapid-fire strikes came during a 29-second blitz, which marked the second-shortest span between goals by a single player in program history.

Aided by her work during the week, Ware registered her 20th career goal and 50th career point in Sunday's contest. She reached those milestones in only her 31st appearance at Christopher Newport, making her the fourth-fastest Captain to eclipse both benchmarks.

Equally dominant during the two outings, Sabbagh put on a clinic while anchoring the midfield unit. On Tuesday against Mary Washington, she registered her second defensive save of the season after blocking a shot early in the first quarter. Later, she punctuated the scoring with a goal midway through the third period. With that performance, she became just the 14th player in program history with a goal and defensive save in the same game and only the fourth Captain to accomplish that feat in a conference bout.

Five days later, Sabbagh continued her two-way play during the team's victory against Sewanee. On the defensive side, she helped limit the Tigers to only two total shots as the Captains controlled possession throughout the 60-minute affair. On Sewanee's second rip, which came off a penalty corner, she stayed deep and swatted the ball out of the circle to prevent any damage.

Meanwhile, on the offensive end, the Lewes, Delaware native established a new career-high with five points while also becoming the first player in program history to convert two penalty strokes in a single game. With that performance, she registered a goal in her fourth straight outing, making her just the 14th Captain with a scoring streak of at least four games.

Overall this season, Ware ranks fourth in the conference with 10 goals and 24 points. Meanwhile, Sabbagh is one of just two players in the league with at least two goals, two assists, and two defensive saves this season. She currently has five strikes, five helpers, and a pair of stops.

Ware, Sabbagh, and the rest of the Captains will return to action on Friday when Christopher Newport hosts No. 17 Lynchburg at 7 p.m.
