GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Christopher Newport junior Alex Price (-5) fired a career-best 66 in the opening round of the O'Briant Jensen Memorial to lead the Captains to a tie for first atop the leaderboard after the first round of action. Price tied the fifth lowest score in relation to par in program history and the fourth best performance all-time in total strokes to take the individual lead by two heading into the second round. 

In addition to the historical performance by Price, sophomore Carrter Morris is also in the top-five individually with an Even Par 71 on the first day. As a team, the Captains are eight-over par with a 292 and tied with Methodist to lead the 22-team field. 

Price has a two stroke lead over Methodist's Cooper Hrabak and leads a group of four players under par through the first 18 holes. The 119-player field includes five Captains in the top-50 and three in the top-25. 

Christopher Newport's junior leader was two-under through the first nine holes and added a three-under stretch on the back to card his career-best performance. He registered four birdies on the front while adding a pair on the back with his second eagle in his last three rounds. Price knocked in a three on the 547-yard Par 5 15th hole. 

Morris led the team through the first five holes, dropping a pair of birdies to open the day two-under. He teetered back above par with three bogeys in the next five holes, but rebounded with his third birdie and seven straight pars to conclude the round at Even par. Morris stands alone in fifth place with the 71, just five strokes back of his teammate leading the tournament. 

With a team-high 13 pars, Robb Kinder is tied for 37th after finishing the first day with a six-over 77. Aidan Baron (+7) is just one stroke back, tied for 43rd. Rounding out the Captains' starting lineup, Jackson Gessaman (+10) is tied for 67th. 

A pair of CNU players entered the tournament as individuals and both finished in the top-40. Owen Cook (+4) is tied for 22nd with three birdies while Michael Thomas (+6) is tied for 37th after sinking a pair on day one. 

The Captains will return to action on Tuesday for a 10:40 am tee time with Methodist, Greensboro, and Averett. The top four teams take the course together separated by just three strokes. Live scoring is available at CNUsports.com
