FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After capping off the regular season with a pair of wins last week, the Christopher Newport field hockey team swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Awards as
Marcella Sabbagh was celebrated as the Defensive Player of the Week, while
Maddison Steele was honored as the league's top offensive standout.
The award marked the first weekly honor for Steele, while Sabbagh was celebrated for the second time this season after previously securing the defensive accolade on October 18. In her career, Sabbagh is now a three-time weekly honoree, joining former legends Shelby Judkins and Brittan Muir as the only field players to earn the award at least three times.
Kicking off the week against No. 20 Salisbury on Wednesday, Sabbagh registered a pair of defensive saves while helping the Captains register a 1-0 victory over the Sea Gulls. With that performance, she became just the 11th player in program history to record multiple defensive saves against a nationally-ranked opponent. She also became the first Captain to do it twice in a career after previously starring against No. 5 Johns Hopkins as a freshman on September 8, 2019.
On Saturday, Sabbagh came back and continued her starring role in a 4-1 win over York (Pa.). In addition to anchoring the penalty corner defense and blocking a shot in the second half, she also contributed three points, including her team-leading seventh assist of the season. The Lewes, Delaware native also landed a dagger in the 40th minute to help stymie the Spartans' comeback bid.
Overall, Sabbagh helped Christopher Newport extend its shutout streak to 280 consecutive minutes prior to York's tally in the second quarter of Saturday's game. That marked the third-longest run in program history and the finest stretch since 2015.
On the other side of the ball, Steele was a dominant force on the attack. Against Salisbury, she landed the game's lone goal after firing a rocket in the 48th minute to break the scoreless deadlock. With that dart, she became just the second freshman in school history to sink the game-winning goal during a 1-0 win over a nationally-ranked opponent.
Following her heroics on Wednesday, Steele came back on Saturday and saw a season-high 45 minutes of action during the 4-1 win against York (Pa.). Continuing her impressive efforts on the offensive side of the ball, she closed out the scoring against the Spartans with another second-half stinger.
So far this season, Steele has appeared in all 15 games while compiling 10 points, including game-winning goals against Salisbury and Eastern Mennonite.
Sabbagh, Steele, and the rest of their teammates will return to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. when the squad hosts the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship at Jennings Family Stadium. Christopher Newport will face the winner of the semifinal match-up between Mary Washington and No. 20 Salisbury, which will take place on Wednesday.
