CNU Senior Sondra Fan Named D3hoops.com Preseason All-American

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University senior Sondra Fan was named a D3hoops.com Preseason All-American on Monday, becoming the fourth player in program history to earn the distinction. Fan was selected to the third team and is the first preseason All-American for the Captains since 2017.

The national media outlet has been selecting Preseason All-Americans every year since the 2010-11 season, barring the 2020-21 campaign because of the COVID-19 cancellation. Christopher Newport has had four players selected all-time, with Fan joining Sam Porter (2017-18), Tia Perry (2013-14), and Chelsie Schweers (2010-11).

The Poquoson, Va. native earned second team All-Region plaudits as a sophomore in 2020 to become only the third Captain in program history to garner All-Region honors as a second-year player. The last time CNU played a full season, Fan led the Captains in scoring, assists, and steals and was selected as a first team All-Conference player. She also earned CAC Tournament MVP after helping lead the nationally-ranked Captains to the conference regular season and tournament titles.

Despite the loss of her junior season to COVID, Fan continues to climb the all-time charts at Christopher Newport. She currently ranks fourth all-time in career three-point field goal percentage (.382) and sits just three triples away from the top-ten in career makes from beyond the arc. In 59 career games, Fan has scored 692 career points (11.7 ppg) with 133 assists and 121 career steals.

This weekend, Fan will open the season with a veteran core of teammates looking to extend a 17-game win streak dating back to December 29, 2019. The Captains reached the NCAA Round of 16 for the seventh time under head coach Bill Broderick and are one of just three programs to reach the sectional round in the last five consecutive tournaments. The season will tip-off on Saturday, November 6 at 2:00 pm against Southern Virginia University at the Freeman Center.
