ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Christopher Newport is ranked No. 24 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III Men's Soccer National Rankings, moving back into the top-25 after closing out the regular season with an 8-4-2 overall record.
After a one-week hiatus from the national rankings released by the coaches' association, the CNU men's soccer program re-entered the the poll in Week 8. The Captains have teetered in and out of the Top-25 over the last several weeks but close out the regular season at 24th in the nation.
Earlier in the year, CNU collected a season-best designation of 15th in the Week 2 poll and has been a part of the Top 25 in five of a possible nine polls while receiving votes in all nine this season.
This season, the Captains have combated the toughest schedule in Division III while facing four teams currently ranked in the Top-25 and one more in the 'others receiving votes' category. That run has included one-goal setbacks to No. 1 Washington & Lee, No. 17 Emory, and wins over over No. 25 Johns Hopkins and North Park, receiving votes in the rankings.
Powered by the strength of that schedule, the Captains secured the top seed in the 2021 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, set to begin this Thursday, November 4, at the University of Mary Washington. CNU has won five of the last six games dating back to the beginning of October, including a 2-0 win over then-No. 5 Johns Hopkins.
Christopher Newport will return to action in the C2C Tournament Semifinals on Friday, November 5 at 11:00 am. The Captains will face off against either #4 Salisbury or #5 UC Santa Cruz after the two teams match up in the first round on Thursday.
