NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport sophomore quarterback
Matt Dzierski was honored Sunday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference, named the league's Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. Dzierski led the Captains to a 35-32 season-ending victory Saturday at Rowan University.
The Lorton, Va., product ran for three touchdowns, and threw two fourth quarter scoring passes to propel the Captains to victory. Dzierski completed 25 of 31 passes for the day for 297 yards and also ran the ball 19 times for 105 yards, accounting for 302 total yards. Dzierski connected with sophomore wide receiver
Michael Bailey twice in the fourth quarter, the second coming in the final minute as the Captains came from behind to pull out the win.
Dzierski started all ten games this season for the Captains, throwing 15 touchdown passes and running for ten scores. He completed 68 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,310 yards (an average of 231 per game). He also led the squad in rushing with 440 yards on 134 attempts (an average of 3.3 yards per carry and 44 yards per game).
Christopher Newport concluded the 2021 season with a 5-5 record overall and a 3-3 mark in the NJAC.
