FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- For the second straight week to start the season, the Christopher Newport baseball team swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference weekly awards as senior
Josh Husby (Hampton, Va.) was named Pitcher of the Week and sophomore
Kyle Schofield (South Riding, Va.) was tabbed Player of the Week.
In addition to the weekly awards being announced, head coach
John Harvell also announced that Tuesday's game scheduled against Methodist University has been postponed due to weather concerns. The Captains and Monarchs will make up the game as part of a doubleheader later this year, turning a two-game series in Fayetteville, N.C. to a three-game set.
Husby garnered his C2C Pitcher of the Year recognition after earning the win at Bridgewater College. He started against the Eagles and twirled seven strong innings for the Captains, allowing three runs and just one earned while striking out six. It was tied for the second longest outing of Husby's career, who hadn't pitched into the seventh inning since May 3, 2019 when he defeated York (Pa.). The six strikeouts was also the most since that same outing when Husby sat down seven Spartans.
This year, the senior right-hander has led the Captains with a 1.38 ERA over 13.0 innings of work. He has 10 strikeouts and has limited walks with just three so far this season. He is 1-0 and his holding opponents to a .200 batting average against.
Schofield earned his first career Player of the Week recognition after leading the Captains offense in four games. He reached base in all four outings and picked up hits in three of the four contests. First, against Hampden-Sydney, Schofield was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. He was held hitless at Bridgewater, but only in one at-bat as he walked in this other three plate appearances.
Then, in his first action against nationally-ranked competition, Schofield smashed his first career home run with a three-run blast at North Carolina Wesleyan. He was 2-for-3 with another walk and a run scored against the Bishops. In the week's finale against 11th-ranked Randolph-Macon, Schofield added an RBI double and his fifth walk of the week to finish the four-game performance with a .417 average, .750 slugging percentage and .588 on-base percentage.
The Captains will return to action this Wednesday, March 17 as they host the University of Lynchburg in non-conference action at 2:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for all and fans attending will be required to adhere to the
Christopher Newport Outdoor Spectator Policy.
