Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Travels to Ashland on Tuesday for 7 p.m. Showdown with Randolph-Macon

Live Stats // Video Stream

ASHLAND, Va. --
The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Captains head to Randolph-Macon for a non-conference test against the Yellow Jackets at Day Field.

Entering the game, Christopher Newport currently sits at 2-2 on the season, including 1-1 on the road. Randolph-Macon is 1-0 after defeating Methodist in the squad's home opener in February.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Yellow Jackets are not allowing fans of visiting teams to attend their home games during the 2021 campaign. However, Randolph-Macon will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at RMCAthletics.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

In their most recent appearance, the Captains dropped a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle to No. 4 Washington & Lee on Saturday. Against the Generals, Christopher Newport held an 8-7 advantage at halftime and hung with the visitors throughout the 60-minute affair before falling, 16-12. Julia Iapicca led the squad with five goals, while Kelsey Winters contributed four assists. Both of those totals marked the most by a Captain against a top-five opponent in program history.

Overall this season, Winters currently leads the Coast-to-Coast Conference with 27 points, while her 18 assists place her second among league competitors. Cat Leighty is also fourth in the conference with 15 points. Meanwhile, Christopher Newport has been exceptionally successful on the draw this season. Sam Wettengel is currently slotted second in the league with 21 draw controls, while Eleanor Collins ranks fifth overall and first among freshmen with 15.

On the defensive side, the Captains stand first in the conference in goals-against-average (8.25) and takeaways (47). Iapicca currently boasts a league-high seven caused turnovers, while Wettengel and Gracie Sanders have six apiece.

Squaring off with Christopher Newport on Tuesday, Randolph-Macon won its lone game of the year after defeating Methodist, 17-1, on February 28. Bella Samper led the Yellow Jackets with four goals and three assists against the Monarchs, while Kayla Ross added six points. Defensively, RMC allowed just two total shots during the game as Caraline Cypher picked up the win while making one save between the pipes.

Following a 4-3 record in 2020, Randolph-Macon was picked second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, slotting just behind No. 4 Washington & Lee. The Yellow Jackets feature a veteran-laden roster that includes seven seniors, including All-Conference midfielder Kaylyn Hewes.

In 17 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 10-7 edge in the series. The Captains have won the last four battles, including a 17-13 victory in 2019. During that contest, Leighty led the visitors with seven points after notching four goals and three assists.

Following Tuesday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return home on Saturday when the squad welcomes Shenandoah to town for a 1 p.m. match-up.
