Kelsey Winters Makes More History, Named IWLCA National Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- Continuing to haul in awards for her work, Kelsey Winters has been named the IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week for her historic showcase during a pair of outings with the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team.

With the honor, Winters becomes the first Captain in program history to be named the National Offensive Player of the Week by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. Previously, the second-year star was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her recent run of dominance that saw her post 16 points and 10 assists in her last two appearances.

Kicking off her award-winning stretch last Wednesday, she torched Virginia Wesleyan during a 23-1 victory at Jennings Family Stadium. Leading the offensive onslaught, Winters contributed six assists and a career-high five goals. With that performance, she became just the fourth player in program history to record at least five goals and five assists in a single game, joining All-American Meaghan Galvin and Christopher Newport Hall of Famers Ashton Marshall and Meghan Harkey.

Showcasing her skills throughout the 60-minute contest, Winters notched five points in the first half, including two goals and a pair of assists during the first five minutes of regulation. Following the break, she came back in the second stanza with six more points, including four in the final 11 minutes to cap off her historic appearance.

Overall, her 11 points equaled the third-highest total in program history and the most by a Captain since 2012. Meanwhile, her six assists marked the fifth-most in school history.

Returning to the field three days later, Winters helped Christopher Newport keep pace with No. 4 Washington & Lee during an epic back-and-forth battle on Saturday. Against the Generals, she contributed a goal and four assists. Her four helpers marked the most by a Captain against a top-five opponent in school history.

Once again, the Harwood, Maryland native was a force throughout the game. Her first goal capped off an early surge that led to a quick 3-0 lead. Later, at the end of the opening period, she added her first two assists, which allowed the Captains to carry an 8-7 lead into the break.

Rounding out her week, Winters posted two more assists in the second half against Washington & Lee, which helped keep the Generals within striking distance until the final horn sounded.

Overall this year, Winters leads the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with 27 points, while her 18 assists stand second in the country. The reigning VaSID All-State Rookie of the Year has notched at least three assists in all four of her appearances while also boasting a pair of multi-goal efforts.
