JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- One of only nine teams in the 25-team field that did not record a score in the 80's, Christopher Newport is tied for eighth after the opening round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. All five Captains finished with a score of 77 or better, led by an Even par 72 from senior Kevin Quinto. 

Quinto is tied for 15th with his 72 through the first 18 holes. He opened the day with a birdie four on the 528-yard Par 5 first hole and was two-over after 11 on the day. Over his final seven holes, Quinto birdied twice and scored five pars. The tournament leader, William Knauth (Carnegie Mellon), is at five-under with 24 players including Quinto within five strokes. 

The Captains fired their second sub-300 round of the year with a seven-over 295 in the opening round. They trail Guilford (-4) by 11 strokes, leading three teams under par after the first round. 

Freshman Aidan Baron (+3) had an exceptional round in his second career tournament. The rookie recorded eight straight pars to start the day before dropping four strokes in the next three holes. Unfazed by the blip on the scorecard, Baron rebounded with a one-under score on the final seven holes. He notched six more pars and a birdie on the 348-yard Par 4 sixteenth hole. With the three-over 75, Baron is tied for 46th in the 133-player field. 

Alex Price (+1) is tied for 25th to finish second on the squad after the first 18 holes. The sophomore erased a slow start by recording par or better in 14 straight holes to close out his day. That run included two birdies, with a four on the 523-yard Par 5 seventh and a three on the 460-yard Par 4 11th hole. 

Robb Kinder also had two birdies and tied for 46th with Baron. Rounding out the Captains overall performance was Carrter Morris (+5), whose 77 would have been good enough to score for 17 teams in the tournament.
