Christopher Newport Men's Golf Sits in Sixth After Two Rounds of Play at the Savannah Invitational

Live Scoring

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Though his sensational rookie campaign was unceremoniously cut short, Alex Price needed no time to shake off the rust from the year-long layoff from collegiate golf as he helped lead Christopher Newport men's golf to a sixth-place showing through 36 holes of the Savannah Invitational. Price (-1) picked up right where he left off following an All-American campaign as a freshman and is currently tied for eighth in the 80-player field.

Price was nothing short of incredible in his opening round, posting the first bogey-free card of his career. Starting on the 144-yard Par 3 eighth hole, Price made nary a mis-step through 18 holes, notching 17 pars and one birdie for the clean scorecard. His lone birdie came on the 530-yard Par 5 11th hole and the opening round positioned him right at the top of the leaderboard.

His bogey-free streak would grow to 22 as he opened the second round with two birdies in the first four holes. He finally gave a stroke back on the 12th hole, but sank two more birdied on the front nine to continue his streak of rounds at Even or better. The sophomore southpaw has now signed for Par or better in seven of his nine career rounds of play. His 36-hole 143 (-1) is good for eighth place heading into the final round.

While Price impressed, rookie Aidan Baron actually stole the show with a team-best score on the day, firing a two-under 70 in the second round. Baron paired his second 18 with a four-over 76 in the first for a strong collegiate debut at 146 (+2). He is currently tied for 16th.

In the second round, Baron started with a bogey on eight but birdied to get that stroke right back on nine and then put it into cruise control. The freshman played a bogey-free back nine with eight pars and one birdie and kept the bogey-less streak going for 16 straight holes before finally giving one back on the final hole of the round. In total, he carded four birdies and 12 pars in the exceptional round.

All five Captains finished in the 70's in the second round with the drop score being 77. CNU signed for a 289 for a one-over round as a team; it was tied for the fifth lowest score of the day in the 16-team event.

"It was great to be back on the course competing with some of the best teams in the country," said head coach Jamie Coleman. The Captains last competed March 9-10, 2020. "I'm very proud of these young men for fighting through windy conditions, and less than perfect greens to be in contention with 18 holes to go tomorrow."

Freshman Carrter Morris (+7) made his debut for the Captains by signing for a 77-74 first day while Carson Castelli (+7) also finished in 151 strokes with a 78-73 showing. Rounding out the day for Christopher Newport was freshman Drew Parr (+14) with an 81-77 showing in his collegiate debut.

The Captains will return to action on Tuesday for a third and final round at the Savannah Harbor course that plays as a 6,845-yard Par 72. Live stats are available with the link found at the top of this page or on the golf schedule page at CNUsports.com.
