SALISBURY, Md. --
Challenging for league supremacy, the Christopher Newport track & field teams will look to return to the top of the conference this week when the Captains head to Salisbury for the Coast-to-Coast Conference Outdoor Championships, which begin on Friday at the SU Track & Field Complex.

The two-day meet will see men's and women's champions crowned in 20 different events. Action gets underway on Friday with the men's hammer and women's pole vault at 4 p.m. The 10,000 will also be contested on the track starting with the women's race at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday's slate opens with field events at 11:30 a.m. Track disciplines begin one hour later.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no spectators will be allowed to attend the championship meet. However, Salisbury will provide live results and a video stream of the action at SUSeaGulls.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Entering the meet, Mary Washington is the defending champion on both sides after sweeping the team titles during the 2019 competition. The 2020 championship was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to Mary Washington's reign, Christopher Newport won five straight outdoor titles on the women's side dating back to 2014. Meanwhile, the men claimed three consecutive crowns before the Eagles unseated them in 2019.

Entering this year's competition, the Captains are well positioned to challenge for the league championships. Currently, Christopher Newport boasts the top mark in the conference in eight men's events, while the women stand atop the league in seven disciplines.

Among the team's elite performers, CJ Reeders has the conference's top distance in both the long and triple jumps, while Daniel Fox is first in the 100 and 200. Fox also teamed up with Collin Stubbs, Javi Haworth, and Brandon Berry for the league's fastest clocking in the 4x100-relay as well.

Rounding out the men's top-ranked competitors, Cooper Albright enters the meet slotted first in the 400, Eric Speeney boasts the best time in the 10,000, and Nick Tolarchyk is first in the 3000-steeplechase.

On the women's side, Christopher Newport is equally dominant in the distance events. Kaitlyn Ardrey and Alexis Smith both rank among the national leaders in their respective disciplines. Smith is 25th in the NCAA in the women's steeplechase, while Ardrey is 31st in the 5000. Maddy Rawlings also stands atop the league in the 10,000.

Over short distances, Alyssa Roach enters the championship as the conference's top seed in the 100-hurdles. She also teamed with Adrianna DeSantis, Hannah Gentrup, and Casey Yenyo on the league's fastest time in the 4x400-relay. Meanwhile, in field events, Peyton Blanding is first in the pole vault, and Mazie Clark is tops in the shot put.

In addition to the top-ranked entries, Christopher Newport also has two competitors looking to regain league titles. Zoe Stauffer is the defending champion in the javelin after winning the women's title in 2019. Meanwhile, Allan Pedin captured the men's pole vault during the 2018 league meet.

Following this weekend's action, the Captains will look to lock up some bids to the NCAA Championships with a slew of Final Qualifiers over the next few weeks.
