EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Finishing birdie-birdie in her final two holes, Christopher Newport junior Shreya Ganta vaulted into a tie for 38th after the second round of action at the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships. Ganta fired a six-over par 78 in the second round and sits at +19 after 36 holes. 

Ganta will look to parlay the strong finish into momentum for the third round on Thursday. After 54 holes, the NCAA Championship will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams to advance to Friday's final round. The individual leader, Makensie Toole (George Fox), is a mere 17 strokes ahead of Ganta at two-over par through the first two rounds. 

The Ashburn, Va. native started to right the ship midway through the round when she sank par putts in five of seven straight holes. The run started with pars on 16 and 17 while she added even holes at 1, 2, and 4. Back-to-back bogeys followed, though, and Ganta was at eight-over through 15 holes; that's when she revved up for her flourish at the end of the day.  

First up, she picked up her ninth par of the day on the 145-yard Par 3 seventh hole. Then, taking on the last of four Par 5's, she grabbed her first birdie of the day with a four on the 450-yard eighth hole. Finally, with a chance to move past over a dozen counterparts, the CNU junior tapped in another birdie putt on the 165-yard Par 3 ninth hole. It was only the 16th birdie recorded on what has played as the seventh toughest hole this week. 

After closing out the second round in the final pairing Wednesday, Shreya will return to the course to tee off at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday. She currently leads the other two individuals in her group by two strokes as Kaila Higgins (Chapman) and Sydney McConnell (Mary Hardin-Baylor) wrapped up the second day at +21.
