Three CNU Men's Tennis Players Qualify for 2021 NCAA Division III Individual Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- In an announcement on NCAA.com late Wednesday evening, a trio of Christopher Newport men's tennis players learned their seasons will be extended into the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships. Senior Scotty Hunter qualified for the 2021 Singles Draw while junior Ryan Macy and sophomore Alec Strause will appear in the 2021 Doubles Championships.

This will be the fourth consecutive postseason that Christopher Newport will be represented, dating back to the 2017 version of the tournament.

Hunter will be just the second Captain to qualify for the singles national championship in nearly a decade as he joins Dominic Lacombe in 2018. Prior to Lacombe, hall of famer Eric Shulman was the last individual qualifier when he accomplished the feat three straight years from 2010-12.

Macy and Strause are just the fourth tandem in program history to qualify for the national doubles championship. In 1983, Detlef Scholz and John Mouring earned the first ever trip and were followed 25 years later by John Mook and Eddie Glidewell. Finally, Justin Cerny and David Reed garnered national qualifying spots in 2017 and 2018.

The Captains will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the individual championships from May 28-30. Hosted by the University of the South and the Chattanooga Sports Commission, the singles tournament will feature 32 players from four regions around the nation. The doubles draw will include 16 pairings from the same region breakdown.

This season, Hunter earned first team All-Conference honors after collecting five wins against the top player from opposing teams this season. He tied for the team lead in victories this season and won four of his first five bouts including a straight set win.

Macy and Strause grabbed first team All-Conference honors in doubles with a team-best 8-4 record at No. 1 doubles. Playing their best at the end of the season, Strause and Macy won four of their last five with the lone setback coming in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (1) to Mary Washington's top-ranked team. In that stretch, the CNU tandem defeated second-ranked Thomas and James Yu from Johns Hopkins and also downed fellow national qualifiers from Southern Virginia Marcos Dias and Daniel Blonquist.
