MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Putting together a remarkable effort in the heptathlon,
Alyssa Roach climbed up the all-time charts in the combined event while leading the Christopher Newport track & field teams during the Mount Olive First Chance Meet on Saturday at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
During the two-day competition, Roach compiled a score of 4,167 in the heptathlon, which moved her to fifth on the school's all-time performance list. It also eclipsed her previous PR by over 300 points and bumped her into the top-25 nationally this season.
Headlining her domination, she threw down a time of 14.72 in the 100-hurdles on Friday. That clocking equaled the ninth-fastest in school lore, tying the standard set by Christopher Newport legend and 15-time National Champion Sheila Trice in 1989.
Along with her work in the hurdles, Roach also finished up Friday with a time of 26.54 in the 200 to go along with a 1.54-meter clearance in the high jump and a 7.76-meter toss in the shot put. On Saturday, she rounded out her historic weekend with a 4.91-meter leap in the long jump and a 22.35-meter launch in the javelin before wrapping things up with a 2:36.07 clocking in the 800.
Overall, her score of 4,167 also stands as the finest mark in the South / Southeast Region this season.
In addition to Roach,
Zoe Stauffer also took part in the heptathlon during the meet. Her finest efforts came in the throws as the senior star placed fourth in the field in the shot put (10.19 meters) and fifth in the javelin (31.07 meters).
On the men's side,
Jack Armel and
Riley Park also pieced together terrific efforts in the decathlon. Leading the way, Armel compiled a score of 5,521, which ranks fourth in program history and second in the South / Southeast Region this year. It also stands 50th in the nation entering the weekend.
Armel polished off his historic performance with a stellar effort on Saturday. During the final day of the competition, he finished third in the pole vault with a 4.35-meter clearance and fifth in the 1500 with a 4:51.30 clocking. Meanwhile, he also added a time of 16.88 in the 110-hurdles while contributing a 23.11-meter mark in the discus and a 44.19-meter showing in the javelin.
On the first day of the decathlon, Armel finished the 100 in 12.19 and the 400 in 55.00. He also excelled in the long jump (6.09 meters), shot put (8.44 meters), and high jump (1.66 meters).
Along with Armel,
Riley Park also competed in the decathlon and contributed four top-10 efforts on the opening day of the combined event. He was sixth in the high jump (1.81 meters), ninth in the long jump (6.18 meters), and 10th in both the 100 (11.49) and 400 (54.17). Rounding out Friday's work, he also unleashed an 8.03-meter toss in the shot put.
On Saturday, Park came back with a 25.03-meter toss in the discus and a 23.88-meter attempt in the javelin. He also shined in the 110-hurdles (15.96), pole vault (3.25 meters), and 1500 (5:30.84). Overall, he concluded the competition with a score of 5,150, which moved him to eighth on the program's all-time performance list.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday when the Captains take part in the VCU Final Qualifier at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
