Shreya Ganta Named Honorable Mention All-American for CNU Women's Golf; Pair of Captains Earn All-Region Honors

HOUSTON, Texas -- Earning her first and the program's second ever certificate, Christopher Newport University junior Shreya Ganta was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) earlier this week. In addition to the All-American nod, Ganta and teammate Erica Whitehouse each collected All-Region plaudits as well.

Ganta joins Whitehouse as the first two Captains to garner All-American recognition as the latter did so following her own national championship appearance in 2019. This season, Ganta qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Golf National Championships and played her way into the record books.

She is one of only six honorable mention All-American selections in 2020-21 after eight individuals were named to the first- and second-team. Twelve total players were recognized as All-Southeast selections, including the two Christopher Newport veterans. Whitehouse becomes the first two-time All-Region selection in program history while Ganta received her first career designation.

This season, Ganta became the second player in the four-year history of CNU Women's Golf to qualify for the national championship. She enjoyed a career-best showing on the course as she led the team with a 78.5 stroke average over 14 rounds of play this spring. She competed in five events with three top-five finishes and also finished amongst the top-30 at the NCAA National Championships.

Ganta signed for a career-low 72 in the second round of the VSGA Intercollegiate, propelling the Captains' veteran to a second place showing in the event. She also logged a third-place showing at The Savannah Invitational with back-to-back sub-80 cards and finished in the 70's in two of three rounds at both the Jekyll Island Women's Co78.5 strokllegiate and the Golfweek DIII Spring Invitational.

In 39 career rounds, Ganta ranks second all-time for the Captains with a 79.7 stroke average.

Joining her teammate on the All-Region squad was Whitehouse, who ranked second on the squad this season with a 79.3 average. She appeared in four events with one win and three top-ten showings. In her final season, Whitehouse continued to establish a high bar for following Captains to reach for as she concluded her tenure with a 77.8 career average. She notched seven tournament victories in her career, including defending her title at the second annual VSGA Women's Intercollegiate this spring.

CNU was one of only three programs with multiple All-Region picks in the Southeast, joined by Centre College and national champion Methodist University.
