GREENSBORO, N.C. --
CJ Reeders and Alyssa Roach will represent the Christopher Newport track & field teams at the NCAA Outdoor Championships next week as Reeders earned a bid in the men's triple jump, while Roach advanced to the title meet in the women's 100-hurdles after both standouts put together extraordinary efforts for the Captains during the spring season.

The NCAA Championships will take place at the Irwin Belk Track Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina. The three-day meet gets underway on May 27.

The national appearance will mark the first for Roach, while Reeders previously qualified in the triple jump during the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships. However, he was unable to challenge for national supremacy after the postseason competition was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, Reeders enters the national meet seeded sixth in the triple jump, which will begin with prelims on May 29 at 10:30 a.m. Meanwhile, Roach is seeded 19th in the 100-hurdles. The prelims of that event will start on May 28 at 2:10 p.m. The finals will take place the following afternoon at 12:50 p.m.

Adding his name to the program's long list of elite triple jumpers, Reeders is the 15th Captain to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event. He is also the 12th to earn a bid in both the indoor and outdoor disciplines.

Establishing himself as one of the nation's top performers in the triple jump, Reeders has orchestrated a tremendous 2021 campaign. In his most recent appearance, he registered a PR during the Rowan Final Qualifier after landing a distance of 14.87 meters. That marked the sixth-best effort in the NCAA this year and vaulted him to seventh on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list.

Dominating the competition throughout the season, Reeders has taken part in the triple jump during nine meets this spring. Of those, he has walked away with the title on seven occasions. Especially successful in recent weeks, he has tied or set a new PR in each of his last three appearances, and he is undefeated against collegiate competition since April 10.

Putting his recent run of domination into perspective, Reeders has recorded a victory in four of his last five outings, while the only man to defeat him during that stretch has been former Olympian Brandon Jones, who just edged him out while competing as an unattached participant at the VCU Final Qualifier on May 16.

Filling up his trophy case, Reeders also claimed a pair of Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference titles this spring. He won the triple jump by over half a foot after landing a 13.97-meter effort at the league competition. Additionally, he walked away with the long jump crown after posting a 6.64-meter showing.

In his brief career, the New Kent, Virginia native is already a three-time Conference Champion after also winning the indoor triple jump title as a freshman in 2020. He also boasts a pair of All-Region accolades and was a first-team All-State selection last year.

Meanwhile, on the women's side, Roach punched her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships while adding her name to a "Who's-Who" list of Christopher Newport legends. Earning a bid in the 100-hurdles, she is the 16th Captain to qualify for the championship meet in that event, including nine All-Americans and Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Bridget Cochran, who won three straight outdoor titles from 1996-98.

Making her push for the NCAA meet on Thursday, Roach jumped up the national leaderboard after throwing down a time of 14.48 at the Rowan Final Qualifier. That clocking not only established a new PR, but it also moved her into the top-25 nationally this year. Additionally, it stands as the fourth-fastest in school history and the top clocking since 2006.

Continuing to make strides throughout the season, Roach lowered her PR during five of the last six meets, culminating in her historic showing at Rowan. During that stretch, the Yorktown, Virginia native nailed down the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference title after completing the finals in 14.97, which beat the runner-up by over a full second.

In addition to her work in the 100-hurdles, Roach has continued to showcase her versatility as well. The second-year standout also won the league title in the 400-hurdles with a time of 1:08.60, while she collected All-Conference honors in the long jump after placing second with a 5.16-meter leap. She also stands in the top-30 nationally in the heptathlon after setting a PR with 4,167 points at Mount Olive last week.

During her two years with the Captains, Roach has already collected four conference titles, including a pair of crowns during the 2020 indoor meet as a freshman. She is also a four-time All-Region selection and claimed both the Virginia State Track and Field Rookie of the Year awards for her work last season.

Guided by the efforts of Roach and Reeders, Christopher Newport swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, while the women currently stand fifth in the regional rankings and the men are slotted sixth in the South / Southeast.
