NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University softball standout
Patty Maye Ohanian wrapped up a memorable career with the Captains last weekend, as CNU concluded its 2021 season in an NCAA Tournament regional in Texas. Ohanian, from Burke, Va., was the only Captain named to the All-Tournament squad in Seguin, Texas, following losses to Emmanuel (Mass.) and Texas Lutheran. She had three hits in her five at bats in the two NCAA games.
Ohanian, who missed more than half of the 2021 season due to a leg injury, was out of the lineup for more than a month but recovered to play in the final 14 games...cementing her place in the Christopher Newport record book. Her four-year statistics produced the highest career batting average in the 37-year history of the program, .444, and her name is among the top ten all-time in numerous offensive categories.
Named a first team All-American in each of her first two seasons with the Captains, Ohanian was limited to just 13 games played in 2020 due to the pandemic-shortened season, and just 20 games this season due to injury. The shortened career of 126 games and 405 at bats make her all-time statistics even more impressive.Â
"Patty Maye is one of the most dangerous hitters we've ever had in our program," Head Coach
Keith Parr said. "She had a knack for coming through in crucial situations. Her offensive production in less than three full seasons of softball was tremendous...I would have loved to see what she would have done in four full years. She will certainly be missed and she'll be remembered as one of the best we've ever had."
Ohanian hit 37 career home runs, third on the all-time list behind only Jessie Atkinson (43) and Sabrina Hill (40). She finished with 157 runs batted in, also third behind Hill (191) and Atkinson (171). She registered a career .827 slugging percentage, second only to Captains teammate
Kaitlyn Hasty (.854). Ohanian also posted a career on base percentage of .481, sixth on the all-time school list.
Her .444 career average moves ahead of the previous all-time leader, Dana Edwards, who recorded a .436 mark. Ohanian's 335 total bases is fourth all-time The Bishop O'Connell High School graduate registered 180 base hits and was 26-27 on stolen base attempts, the eighth-best percentage all-time. Her 36 career doubles also places ninth on the all-time list.Â
Ohanian helped lead the Captains to all three NCAA Tournaments played in the last four years, as well as two conference championships. She graduated from Christopher Newport earlier this month and will now embark on a career in athletic administration.
