CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- With a quarterfinal exit against defending national champion Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico (Emory), junior
Reagan Delp wrapped up the greatest NCAA run in Christopher Newport women's tennis history on Saturday morning. The exceptional performance led Delp to earning the first ever All-American certificate since the program's inception in 1978.
Delp reached the Quarterfinal round with a pair of wins on Friday, propelling her to All-American status. She was faced with taking on the top-seeded Emory Eagle in the final eight and battled hard against the talented opponent but ultimately suffered a 6-4, 6-1 setback to Gonzalez-Rico.
Early in the first set, the CNU junior held serve all the way until the score was knotted at four games apiece. The only break came in the final game when the left-handed Gonzalez-Rico slipped by Delp for a first set win, 6-4.
Momentum shifted in favor of the Captains All-American to start the second set, breaking Gonzalez-Rico serve with an impressive backhand winner and a double fault to go ahead 1-0. Unfortunately, that would be the lone win for Delp in the second set as the top-seeded foe pulled away to clinch the match with a 6-1 win.
Reagan went 2-1 in the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championship, becoming just the second tennis player in CNU history, men's or women's, to win more than one match in the postseason event. She joins Holden Knight, who was 3-1 and a national semifinalist in 1993 in the exclusive club.
With the junior collecting All-America plaudits, women's tennis becomes the 20th different CNU program to boast at least one All-American in its history. She is the first tennis player to earn the recognition since Hall of Famer Eric Shulman and Matt King garnered the accolade in 2012 for the men's program.
