Kaitlyn Ardrey and Alyssa Roach Headline VaSID All-State Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Honorees

HOLLINS, Va. -- Six Captains earned All-State Women's Outdoor Track & Field honors, while Kaitlyn Ardrey and Alyssa Roach secured two awards apiece as Christopher Newport was well-represented on the All-State squads, which were announced on Wednesday by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Headlining the award-winning contingent, Roach was a first-team selection for her work in both the hurdles and heptathlon. Meanwhile, Ardrey also garnered top plaudits in the distance events and was a second-team selection in the mid-distance disciplines.

Joining Ardrey and Roach on the first-team squad, Mazie Clark was named one of the top throwers in Virginia. Meanwhile, Peyton Blanding, Mae Savoie, and Alexis Smith all secured second-team accolades for their efforts during the spring season.

One of the most dominant athletes in Virginia, Roach was one of only two standouts in the state to earn a pair of first-team awards in 2021. The second-year star qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100-hurdles and eventually finished 17th in the nation in the event. Meanwhile, her PR of 14.48 at Rowan in May was the second-fastest clocking in the South / Southeast in 2021 and placed her fourth on the program's all-time performance list.

In addition to earning All-State and All-Region honors for her work in the hurdles, Roach also swept the conference titles in both the 100- and 400-meter disciplines. With her work at the title meet, the Yorktown, Virginia native became the first athlete in the conference to sweep the hurdles in six years.

Along with her starring work in the hurdles, Roach also secured All-State and All-Region nods in the heptathlon. Ranked first in the South / Southeast Region, she registered a score of 4,167 at Mount Olive in May. That vaulted her to fifth on the program's all-time performance list and placed her 28th on the national charts.

Setting a new standard in distance events at Christopher Newport, Ardrey put together a record-breaking campaign in 2021. During her third season with the Captains, she established a new school record in the 5,000 after registering a time of 17:48.61 during the Colonial Relays in April. That shaved nearly a full second off the previous program standard, which stood for two decades before her historic run. It also placed her among the top-50 nationally during the spring.

Equally effective in the middle distances, Ardrey also ranked second in the state and fourth in the region in the 1500 after clocking in at 4:45.40 during the Emory Final Qualifier. That mark also moved her to seventh on the program's all-time charts.

Stockpiling awards for her work in 2021, Ardrey also collected a pair of All-Region accolades to go along with her two All-State honors. Additionally, the Williamsburg, Virginia native was named the Coast-to-Coast Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week twice during the year after earning the honor on March 16 and April 6.

Hauling in first-team All-State plaudits as a thrower, Clark was especially successful in the shot put during her third year with the Captains. Securing All-Region honors in the event, she ranked fifth in the South / Southeast after setting a new PR with an 11.90-meter launch at the Eagle Invitational in April. That mark also jumped her to ninth on the school's all-time performance list.

Along with her work in the shot put, Clark also scored in the discus during the Coast-to-Coast Conference Championships after finishing third in the league with a 34.26-meter toss. Additionally, the Winchester, Virginia native also added a PR in the hammer with a 37.96-meter effort in April. She eventually ended the year slotted in the top-25 in the region in both disciplines.

Orchestrating a breakout campaign in the pole vault, Blanding earned All-Conference, All-State, and All-Region accolades for her efforts in the event. She claimed the league championship after topping 3.08 meters during the conference competition. Just two weeks later, she set a new PR with a 3.41-meter clearance at the VCU Final Qualifier, which marked the second-best effort in school history and placed her fourth in the South / Southeast Region in 2021.

Earning recognition for her work in the middle distances, Savoie was a standout during her first outdoor season. At the league meet, she placed second in the 800 and 1500 while securing All-Conference nods in both events. During the spring, she posted a PR in the 800 (2:22.01) at the Blue & Silver Challenge before adding her top mark in the 1500 (4:48.77) at the Colonial Relays. Both of those efforts placed her in the top-10 in the region, while her 1500 time also moved her to eighth in program lore.

Rounding out the decorated competitors, Smith was nearly unstoppable in the steeplechase. During her third year with the program, she won the conference championship in 11:27.70. Earlier in the spring, she set a new PR after finishing in 11:25.45 during the Colonial Relays. That marked the third-fastest clocking in school history and placed her in the top-50 nationally. Meanwhile, she also scored points in the 5000 at the league meet after coming in third among conference competitors.

Guided by the All-State honorees, Christopher Newport claimed the Coast-to-Coast Conference title and finished the year slotted fifth in the South / Southeast Rankings.
