Three Captains Earn VaSID All-State Women's Golf Honors; Ganta and Whitehouse Named to First Team

ASHLAND, Va. -- Leading the state with three overall selections to the 2020-21 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Women's Golf teams, Christopher Newport headlined the group with a pair of first team picks. Junior Shreya Ganta and senior Erica Whitehouse picked up top honors while sophomore Lauren Sims also collected an All-State certificate with a spot on the second team.

In total, ten players were recognized from across the Commonwealth with Christopher Newport representing nearly a third of the All-State picks. Ganta and Whitehouse were each selected for the third consecutive season while Sims garnered second team plaudits for the second straight year.

Ganta adds to her third-year mantel after also being named an honorable mention All-American by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). She became the second player in the four-year history of CNU Women's Golf to qualify for the national championship. While there, Ganta won a sudden-death playoff to make the cut and finished the event tied for 28th with a +32 over 72 holes of action.

She enjoyed a career-best showing on the course as she led the team with a 78.5 stroke average over 14 rounds of play this spring. She competed in five events and posted three top-five finishes while also posting the top-30 finish at the NCAA National Championships. She signed for a career-low 72 in the second round of the VSGA Intercollegiate, propelling her to a second-place effort in the annual tournament.

The only player to finish ahead of Ganta at the VSGA's was Whitehouse, who secured her second straight win and seventh career medalist finish. She was named a WGCA All-Region selection in 2021 after ranking second on the team with a 79.3 average. Whitehouse appeared in four events with the one victory and three top-ten showings. In her final season, the record-setting star continued to establish a high bar for following Captains as she concluded her tenure with a 77.8 career average.

Rounding out the 2021 All-State picks was Sims, recording her second consecutive second team selection. A starter for the Captains in all four regular season events, Sims finished the year with an 83.5 stroke average to rank third on the squad. The underclassmen matched her career low round with a 76 in the Golfweek DIII Spring Invitational, tied for the sixth best performance of the season for CNU. In that event, Sims finished 17th out of 40 under tough course conditions; she followed that up with a fifth-place showing in the VSGA Intercollegiate with an 18-over 162 (85-77).

First team All-American Megan Kanaby (W&L) was named State Player of the Year and her head coach, Kelsie Carralero, earned Coach of the Year honors. Rounding out the major award winners was Emily Brubaker from Lynchburg tabbed the State Rookie of the Year.
