CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. --
For their success both in and out of the classroom, Adrianna DeSantis and Zoe Stauffer hauled in CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades as the two members of the Christopher Newport track & field program were celebrated on Thursday afternoon by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Adding her name to the history books, Stauffer became just the second Captain in program history to earn the recognition three times after previously securing the award in 2019 and 2020. She joined Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Aimee Gibbs as the only track & field standouts to receive three All-District honors.

Meanwhile, DeSantis was selected to the prestigious squad for the first time in her career. She and Stauffer are just the second pair of teammates to earn the award in the same year in program history, joining Stauffer and Monica Lannen, who were both honored in 2020.

Overall, the Captains were two of 10 honorees from District 5, which includes student-athletes from 11 different states ranging from Virginia to Florida to Missouri. They are now eligible to receive Academic All-American honors, which will be decided through a national vote and announced on August 10.

A standout sprinter at Christopher Newport, DeSantis put together another decorated campaign in 2021. During the spring, the third-year star picked up a pair of All-League honors after a tremendous showcase at the Coast-to-Coast Conference Championships. At the league meet, she came in second in the 400 while also guiding the 4x100-relay to a first-place finish.

For her work during the year, DeSantis wrapped up the season as the league's second-ranked performer in the 400 (1:00.63) and third in the 200 (26.35). Her top clocking in the 400 also slotted her 25th among all competitors in the South / Southeast Region. Overall, the Mohegan Lake, New York native won six races during the outdoor campaign, including the 200 and 400 at the UMW Opener in March.

In her career, DeSantis is a six-time All-Conference performer while securing honors in four different events. She is also a two-time league champion after winning crowns as a member of the outdoor 4x100-relay team as a junior and the indoor 4x400-relay unit as a sophomore.

In the classroom, the neuroscience major is a perennial Academic All-Conference performer and a regular on the Dean's List while boasting a near perfect GPA.

Showcasing her diverse skill set, Stauffer continued to star in a variety of events during a stellar senior campaign. The fourth-year standout secured second-team All-Conference honors in the 400-hurdles while garnering All-Region nods in the heptathlon. She eventually finished the year ranked third in the South / Southeast in the combined event after recording 3,990 points at the New Captains Classic.

Along with her work in the hurdles and heptathlon, Stauffer also unloaded a 37.18-meter heave in the javelin, which marked the sixth-best throw in the region during the year and the second-finest performance by a league competitor. Additionally, the Spring Grove, Pennsylvania native was named the Coast-to-Coast Conference Field Athlete of the Week on March 23 after winning the javelin at the UMW Opener.

During her tenure in Newport News, Stauffer is a five-time All-Region performer and a two-time All-Conference selection.

A cellular, molecular, and physiological biology major, Stauffer graduated with a perfect GPA and was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Conference Women's Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year while earning a spot on the VaSID Academic All-State Team.
