FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- In an announcement made by the organization on Friday, a trio of Christopher Newport women's tennis players were honored as Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State selections for the 2020-21 campaign. Junior
Reagan Delp was named a first team All-State selection in singles while rookie
Tessa Trate added second team honors in both singles as well as doubles with partner
Amanda Yermal.
The 2021 contingent is tied for the second most All-State honorees in a single season for Christopher Newport with three, falling just one player shy of the record-setting 2017 group. Trate is the third freshman and fourth player overall to earn All-State recognition in both singles and doubles in the same year, joining Alexandra Drye (2015), McKinney Harwood (2015, 2017), and Johanna Ranta-aho (2019, 2020). It is the first All-State certificate for all three players.
Leading the way for Christopher Newport in the 2021 season was junior
Reagan Delp, who made history with her performance this Spring. The first All-American in program history, Delp separated herself as one of the most accomplished players in program history when she advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Singles National Championships. The CNU junior won nine matches this season, including seven at No. 1 singles, and would go on to earn the highest individual national ranking in CNU women's tennis lore. Wrapping up the season ranked No. 16 nationally, Delp is also ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic South regional rankings.
Trate also set a new standard of success for the Captains as she became the first freshman to earn a national ranking in both singles and doubles play. She finished the year ranked No. 36 in singles and No. 25 in doubles play with Yermal, joining all-time great Johanna Ranta-aho as the only players in program history to earn national rankings in singles and doubles during the same season.
In singles action, Trate put together an exceptional rookie campaign while playing at No. 2. She was 7-3 overall including a pair of wins against Division I competition and her lone regular season losses came to 22nd-ranked Anjie Kashyap (Johns Hopkins) and Gabi Moss (Washington & Lee). She was named Conference Rookie of the Year and earned first team All-Conference honors.
In doubles play, Trate and Yermal were named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Doubles Team of the Year and first team All-League accolades. The duo picked up a total of eight wins, including another over Division I Norfolk State, while playing exclusively at No. 1 doubles. The Captains pairing went a perfect 4-0 in conference play and became just the third doubles team in program history to earn a spot in the final national rankings of the year.
As a team, Christopher Newport bested its program high final ranking by one, earning a spot in the final top-25 for just the second time. With the aforementioned group leading the way, Christopher Newport finished 2021 ranked No. 24 in the nation.
