WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team split up for the second week in a row, competing in a pair of regattas on the second weekend. After the first day, the Captains are leading the Kingsmill Cup hosted by the College of William & Mary while sitting in 13th place at the Chesapeake Invitational at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
In Maryland, the fleet was forced into a holding pattern for most of the day with light wind conditions. By the end of the day only one race in each division was sailed with the Captains taking eighth place in A division and 16th in B division. The 24-point performance has the Captains one point behind one of Navy's teams and tied with another.
Meanwhile, the wind was slightly more cooperative in Hampton Roads as the fleet in Williamsburg managed four races in A division and two in B division. Still a light day on the water, but enough for Christopher Newport to build a seven-point advantage after the first round of racing.
In the B division boat,
Daniel Hodges and
Liam Orr only competed in two races but they made the most of them, winning both for the Captains.
Brian Fox and
Emily Learn competed in the A division boat and also finished with the low score on Saturday, but took second to a tiebreaker with Hampton. The A division tandem scored 9 points in four races with a second, a first, and two third place finishes.
The teams will return to the water on Sunday to complete as much racing as the wind will allow to wrap up the two regattas. A full scoring recap will be available at CNUsports.com.
