FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Gabi Gray has been named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Christopher Newport field hockey team to its third shutout of the season on Saturday.
The weekly award is the first of Gray's career. Overall, she is the fifth goalie in program history to earn the honor, joining former legends Bailey Lien, Savannah Cummings, Stephanie McKinney, and Olivia Davis.
In a non-conference showdown with St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, Gray pieced together another outstanding effort between the pipes. During a 4-0 victory over the Seahawks, she equaled her career-high with six saves. Coming through in crucial situations, she made four of her stops in the first 37 minutes of the game while the two teams were engaged in a scoreless deadlock. Later, she came back with two more saves in the fourth quarter to help stymie St. Mary's comeback bid.
Her showcase on Saturday continued a remarkable run at home for the Lovettsville, Virginia native. In 165 minutes of action at Jennings Family Stadium, Gray has yet to allow a goal this year. That streak stands as the longest run to start a season at home since Elexa Nosonchuk posted a school-record shutout streak of 428:03 to kick off the 2007 campaign.
Incredibly, in her entire career, Gray has allowed just a single goal at Jennings Family Stadium. Since her debut in 2019, she owns a microscopic 0.30 goals-against-average and an equally impressive .917 save percentage at home.
In her eight total appearances in 2021, Gray now boasts a 1.96 goals-against-average and .667 save percentage. In 465 minutes of work, she has 26 total saves and a pair of shutout victories against Catholic and St. Mary's (Md.).
Gray and the rest of her teammates will return to action on Saturday when Christopher Newport hosts Concordia (Wisc.) at 11 a.m.
