Dzierski and Williams Receive Weekly Honors from New Jersey Athletic Conference

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Two members of the Christopher Newport football squad received recognition on Sunday from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Sophomore quarterback Matt Dzierski was selected the Offensive Player of the Week in the conference, while freshman running back Aeron Williams was named Offensive Rookie of the Week.

The Captains defeated Washington and Lee University, 28-24, Saturday night at TowneBank Stadium in an exciting season opener. Dzierski led the way by throwing two touchdown passes, and running for two scores, including the game-winner in the final minute of the fourth quarter.

Dzierski, from Lorton, Va., completed 29 of 39 pass attempts for 266 yards and also ran the ball 14 times for 47 yards in his first start as a Captain. His six-yard scoring run with just 39 seconds remaining proved to be the deciding score as the Captains pulled out the victory.

Williams, a product of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, began his CNU career by running the ball seven times for 24 yards in his first collegiate game. He also caught a pass from Dzierski in the season-opening triumph.

Christopher Newport will travel to Danville, Va., on Saturday to play Averett University. The game is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
