LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Paced by three historic efforts, the Christopher Newport cross country teams added a perfect punctuation mark to their regular season with a starring performance at the Rowan Border Battle on Saturday at the Gloucester County DREAM Park.
Facing some of the nation's top programs in a 36-team field, the men finished eighth overall, beating conference rivals Salisbury and Mary Washington as well as a contingent from No. 7 Johns Hopkins. Meanwhile, the women came in 13th in the Championship 6k with similar victories over Salisbury, Mary Washington, and No. 4 Johns Hopkins.
Headlining the individual standouts,
Nathanael Ferrante and
Daniel Ferrante jumped into the top-15 on the program's all-time 8k performance list. Nathanael placed fourth overall after clocking in at 25:01.9. That marked the seventh-fastest time in school history and the finest effort by a Captain since 2017. It also shaved 28 seconds off his previous PR.
Moments later, Daniel completed the course in 25:11.7, which sliced 23 seconds off his PR and vaulted him to 11th on the program's all-time charts.
Meanwhile, in the women's 6k,
Madi Rawlings clocked in at 22:53.5, which moved her to 16th in school history. It also chipped 14 seconds off her personal-best effort, which she set at last year's Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
Along with the history-makers, plenty of other Captains threw down course-best clockings on Saturday. In the men's Championship 8k,
Nick Tolarchyk placed 85th in 26:36.7, which beat his mark from last year's meet by 25 seconds. Meanwhile,
Luke Hawkins (27:18.7),
Cooper Albright (27:40.3), and
Jason Sangiuliano (28:05.3) also topped their efforts from 2021. Albright was especially impressive, chopping over two minutes off his time of 29:52.2 from last fall.
On the women's side,
Lex McGrail and
Adalyn Perez also eclipsed their efforts from the 2021 Border Battle. McGrail finished 70th in 24:00.8, which beat her course-best clocking by over 90 seconds. Shortly thereafter, Perez crossed in 25:28.8. That obliterated her time of 28:07.9 at Rowan last year.
Among other scorers for Christopher Newport,
John Vogel finished third on the men's team with a time of 26:07.0, while
Chaney Arick rounded out the squad's top-seven with a 27:52.2 mark. For the women,
Eliza Dana was third on the team in the Championship 6k with a time of 23:51.4, while
McKenzie Hurley was fifth in 24:45.4.
Claire Garster (25:35.8) and
Libby Miles (25:54.3) also cracked the squad's top-seven.
Later, in the Open races,
Michelle Valcich recorded Christopher Newport's best 6k time after finishing 11th in 25:44.6, while
Tom Foti led the men in the 8k with a 29:07.3 clocking. Among other efforts in those races,
Erin Elliott eclipsed her time from last year's meet by over two minutes after crossing the line in 26:07.4.
The Captains will return to action on October 29 when Christopher Newport competes for league supremacy during the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships at Salisbury.
