NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University junior quarterback
Matt Dzierski was honored Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Dzierski was selected the league's Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
The Captains chalked up their third straight victory on Saturday, winning 24-13 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey. Dzierski had a hand in all three touchdowns for CNU, recording a scoring pass and two touchdown runs in the victory over the Cougars.
Dzierski, from Lorton, Va., engineered three scoring drives of 64 yards or more in CNU's first win ever at Kean in four tries. He opened the game with a 20-yard scoring strike to senior
Xander Jedlick to complete a 12-play, 77-yard drive. He later polished off a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard scoring plunge. The South County High School product also scored on a seven-yard scamper, giving him seven touchdown runs and five TD passes through the first six games this season. Ryan Castle, culminating a drive that went 64 yards on 13 plays.
Dzierski, the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Year last year, finished the day 18 of 24 passing for 186 yards, and also ran the ball 27 times for 51 yards.
Paul Crowley's squad is now 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC. The Captains are tied with Salisbury at 2-0 atop the conference standings. Christopher Newport returns to Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium this Saturday for Homecoming Weekend action. CNU will host the Pioneers of William Paterson University (4-3, 1-2). Kickoff time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
