COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team will be well-represented in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game as
Abby Asuncion and
Marcella Sabbagh were both selected to represent the Captains during the prestigious competition, which will be held on November 19 at Rowan University's Richard Wackar Stadium in Glassboro, New Jersey.
The two standouts join an ever-growing list of Christopher Newport legends who have been chosen for the All-Star game. Overall, 21 Captains have now been named to the Senior Team. The program has been represented during each of the past 13 competitions, while Asuncion and Sabbagh are the seventh pair of teammates to earn the recognition in the same season.
One of the most electric offensive contributors in program history, Asuncion currently ranks sixth all-time with 34 career goals and eighth with 80 points. Her 1.60 points-per-game average also slots her third on the career charts, while her nine game-winning tallies are tied for the fourth-most by a Captain.
Adding to her impressive résumé in 2022, Asuncion currently leads Christopher Newport with 22 points. Her seven goals are tied for the team-lead, and her eight assists already stand as a new career-high. Meanwhile, she has been just as effective on the other side of the field, serving as a flyer on the penalty corner defense while helping frustrate opposing attacks from her perch on the midfield unit.
For her work, the Sterling, Virginia native is a two-time first-team All-Conference, All-State, and All-Region selection. Additionally, Asuncion was named a first-team All-American and the Region Player of the Year as a junior.
Equally impactful since arriving in Newport News in 2019, Sabbagh has scattered her name throughout the program record books. She currently ranks third in school history with 13 defensive saves, while her 10 penalty strokes are the most ever by a Captain. Meanwhile, her 15 assists rank 11th on the program's all-time charts.
As a senior, Sabbagh has continued making an impact on both ends of the field. Defensively, she has been a centerpiece on a unit that ranks seventh in the nation with a 0.71 goals-against-average while clearing 97 percent of the opposition's penalty corner attempts. On the offensive side, she has 14 points, including a school-record six penalty stroke goals.
A decorated competitor, the Lewes, Delaware native is a two-time All-Conference and All-State selection during her career. Sabbagh also hauled in All-Region plaudits for her performance as a junior.
Making history together, Asuncion and Sabbagh also became just the fourth set of teammates to start 50 consecutive games alongside each other during their last appearance on Monday against Susquehanna. The two have cracked the starting lineup in every game since the start of the 2019 campaign.
Asuncion, Sabbagh, and the rest of their teammates will return to action on Friday at noon when Christopher Newport squares off with Rhodes in Memphis, Tennessee.
