NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Freshman defensive back
Yasir Geter was named the Defensive Rookie of the Week Monday afternoon by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Geter has now won the weekly honor three times this season, and it's the second straight week he's received the accolade.
Geter, a freshman cornerback from Suffolk, Va., again posted an outstanding effort as the Captains recorded a 14-13 victory at Montclair State Saturday afternoon. Geter recorded a sack and also intercepted a pass in the end zone to end a Montclair State drive in the opening half. CNU's defense allowed just one score in the road victory, and the Captains have now given up just one touchdown in the second half of the last three victories.
The five-game winning streak is the first in a single season since 2014 when the Captains advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. CNU has not won six straight during a single season since 2011, when the Captains recorded seven consecutive victories.
Christopher Newport and Salisbury are both tied at 4-0 atop the NJAC standings with two weeks to go in the regular season.
The Captains complete their home schedule this Saturday, hosting the College of New Jersey at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
