Complete Schedule
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Head coach
Bill Broderick and the Christopher Newport women's basketball team announced it's schedule for the 2022-23 season on Wednesday afternoon as the Captains prepare to take on a challenging 25-game slate opening on Tuesday, November 8.
After one of the most impressive seasons in program history a year ago, the Captains concluded a 43-game winning streak in the NCAA Division III Tournament Round of 16 against Trinity (Texas). Earning the first No. 1 national ranking in program history along the way, Christopher Newport finished out the year with a 26-1 overall record and advanced to the program's sixth consecutive Round of 16 appearance. CNU finished the year ranked No. 7 in the final rankings of the 21-22 campaign and will look to build on that success again this season.
The 2022-23 season features a variety of new competitors with seven opponents the Captains have never faced before and several road trips to new locales. CNU will have nine home games and 16 contests away from the friendly confines of the Freeman Center, including tournament appearances in Texas and Puerto Rico.
The season opens with a home game against Averett on November 8 before the aforementioned flight to the Lonestar State in a challenging matchup early in the season. The Captains will face East Texas Baptist University on their home floor on Friday, November 11, followed by a neutral site matchup against Letourneau University on November 12. ETBU was ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation in 2020-21 and opened last season in the same spot.
The road-heavy start will continue from there with four of the next six games away from home starting with a matchup at Mary Baldwin on November 16. The Captains return home for a bout with Goucher on November 19 followed by a quick trip to Raleigh, N.C. to face William Peace on November 22. Just after thanksgiving, CNU will play against Lynchburg as part of a triple header at the Freeman Center on November 27, with the women tipping off at 2:00 pm between a pair of men's contests. Rounding out the month of November, CNU will travel to Bridgewater on November 30 before taking on Greensboro College on the road December 3.
CNU hosts N.C. Wesleyan on December 11 before preparing for the flight to Puerto Rico with games on December 18 and 19th against Colorado College and SUNY Cortland. Facing both programs for the first time, the Captains are making their first tropical tournament appearance since the Hoop 'N Surf Classic in 2017-18.
Following the holiday break, Christopher Newport will entertain Rowan on December 30 before kicking off another extended road trip with four straight and eight of the next nine games as the visiting team. In the first 11 days of the New Year, the Captains will play at Meredith (Jan 2), in an exhibition against Maryland Eastern Shore (Jan 4), at Washington & Lee (Jan 8), and Mary Washington (Jan 11). A quick trip back home to host the Sea Gulls on January 14 stalls the long road trip for a moment before CNU gets back on the bus for trips to Southern Virginia (Jan 18), Marymount (Jan 25), Pratt Institute (Jan 28), and New Jersey City (Jan 29).
Three of the last four games of the regular season are scheduled for the Freeman Center as the Captains host the 2022 C2C Classic on February 4-5, welcoming Mary Washington, UC Santa Cruz, and Regent for a four-game in-season tournament. CNU takes on Regent first and the Banana Slugs on day two.
Closing out the year, the Captains will make the return trip to Salisbury on February 11 before hosting Mary Washington on February 15.
This year, the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship tournament will be held on the campus of Mary Washington from February 23-25. The Captains will look to defend their crown at Ron Rosner Arena in the Anderson Center.
