Billhimer and Asuncion Earn Top Individual Honors as Six Captains Secure Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference All-League Field Hockey Accolades

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Brooke Billhimer was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while Abby Asuncion was celebrated as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year as six total members of the Christopher Newport field hockey team secured All-League accolades for their work during the 2022 campaign.

With her individual award, Billhimer became the first Captain to be named the conference's top defensive standout. Meanwhile, Asuncion became the first player in program history to secure the league's prestigious Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which is bestowed upon the individual who best combines superior academic and athletic achievement.

Along with the headliners, Lily Kerr, Emma Logue, Alexis Morales, and Marcella Sabbagh were also named to the first-team All-Conference squad. Overall, the six honorees marked the second-most in school history, trailing only last year's squad, which produced seven first-team selections.

Making a little history with her honor, Asuncion joined former All-American Bailey Lien as the only Christopher Newport standouts to earn three first-team All-League plaudits after she was previously celebrated in 2019 and 2021. Meanwhile, Billhimer became the first Captain to earn a spot on the top squad as both a freshman and sophomore, and Kerr became the first freshman goalie in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference to secure first-team accolades since Lien was honored during her debut in 2013.

Along with the history-makers, Sabbagh picked up her third career All-League citation while earning first-team nods for the second straight season. Rounding out the award-winners, Logue and Morales were celebrated for the first time.

Starring in the center of Christopher Newport's back line, Billhimer has anchored a defensive unit that ranks among the top teams in the nation. Starting all 17 games, she leads the Captains with 1,012 minutes of action and has not missed a second in 15 of her appearances. During her time on the field, the Gloucester, Virginia native ranks second on the squad with three defensive saves while also chipping in with four points, including a pair of assists.

Aided by Billhimer's work, Christopher Newport stands fifth in the NCAA with a 0.65 goals-against-average while producing 10 shutouts. That total ranks seventh in the country and second on the program's all-time charts.

Excelling on and off the field, Asuncion has been a standout student-athlete since arriving in Newport News. A 2021 first-team All-American and the reigning Region Player of the Year, she ranks sixth in school history with 35 goals, including a team-high eight strikes as a senior. So far this season, she has a pair of multi-goal outings against Virginia Wesleyan and Centre, while her eight assists have already established a new season-high for the fourth-year star.

Equally impressive in the classroom, Asuncion is a perennial Academic All-Conference selection as an English major. The Sterling, Virginia native is also a three-time member of the NFHCA National All-Academic Team and a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

Bursting onto the scene with a dominant debut campaign, Kerr currently ranks second in the entire NCAA with a 0.32 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage. Her seven solo shutouts are also tied for the most in program history. So far this season, the Annapolis, Maryland native has allowed only four goals in 750 minutes of work while earning the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week Award on October 19 after a 13-save masterpiece against No. 13 Shenandoah.

Flashing a well-balanced arsenal on the offensive side of the ball, Logue is tied for fifth in the league with eight goals and five assists, while her 21 points slot her sixth among conference competitors. The senior has also deposited three game-winning goals, which ranks second in the league. Additionally, the Ashburn, Virginia native has served as one of the primary inserters on the penalty corner crew, which has generated nine goals this year.

In her first year with the Captains after spending three seasons at Syracuse, Morales has been incredible in all facets of the game during her time in Newport News. Offensively, she has nine points, including a key second-half dagger that helped propel Christopher Newport past No. 17 Lynchburg. Meanwhile, the Yorktown, Virginia native was also celebrated as the league's Defensive Player of the Week on October 3 and has helped out as a flyer on the penalty corner defense throughout the season.

One of the nation's most well-rounded standouts, Sabbagh has continued to star on both ends of the field during her senior campaign. On the back end, she is a two-time Defensive Player of the Week honoree and a stabilizing force on the penalty corner unit while boasting a pair of defensive saves in 1,011 minutes of action. Meanwhile, the Lewes, Delaware native also sits third on the team with 16 points, including two game-winning tallies and a school-record six penalty stroke goals.

Aided by the work of the All-Conference honorees, Christopher Newport currently sports a 13-4 record and will open the league playoffs on Wednesday at 5 p.m. with a semifinal tilt against Mary Washington at Jennings Family Stadium.
