Christopher Newport will be one of 31 schools to take part in the women's race on Saturday, while 28 men's teams will square off against the Captains later in the day. Among the programs set to compete this weekend, Emory is the defending champion in both races. The Eagles are once again the favorites on the women's side in 2022, while Lynchburg boasts the top-ranked men's squad this year.
Entering the regional competition, Christopher Newport is ranked fourth in the women's race and fifth on the men's side.
Saturday will mark the third time the Captains have hosted the regional meet in the past decade after Lee Hall Mansion was previously used in 2013 and 2017. The women placed eighth during both of those competitions, while the men won the regional title in 2017 after finishing fourth in 2013.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a solid showing in the program's first postseason appearance of the year after the men and women both finished second at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships last month. During the league meet,
Nathanael Ferrante,
Daniel Ferrante,
Madi Rawlings, and
Lex McGrail all collected first-team All-Conference honors for their work, while
John Vogel,
Eliza Dana, and
Mae Savoie were second-team selections.
Along with their performance during the league meet, Rawlings and the Ferrante twins are reigning All-Region performers after excelling at the South Championships last year. Rawlings finished 35th in the women's race, while,
Daniel Ferrante was 18th on the men's side, and Nathanael placed 20th overall.
Aided by those efforts, the men came in third at the 2021 South Regionals, while the women finished fourth.
The winners of the 10 Regional Championships from around the country will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships, which will take place at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan on November 19. Additionally, 22 other programs will earn at-large bids to the title meet.
Along with the 32 teams that earn a spot in next week's championship competition, 70 other individuals will also qualify for the meet. The top-seven individuals from each of the regional meets who do not advance as members of the team qualifiers will earn a spot at the NCAA Championships.
Last year, former standouts Kaitlyn Ardrey and Logan Funk represented Christopher Newport at the national meet as individual qualifiers. The men last took part in the NCAA Championships in 2017 when the Captains finished third in the team standings.
