TEMPE, Ariz. -- The first regional rankings of the 2022-23 season have been announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) with Christopher Newport senior
Alec Strause picking up his first singles ranking since December 9, 2021. The Captains' veteran will start the spring season ranked No. 20 in the Atlantic South region.
The Charlotte, N.C. native has enjoyed a strong fall season with three wins in singles action including one against a Division I opponent. Strause picked up a season-opening win against Hugo Massoni Lena of Norfolk State in the Virginia Wesleyan Invite before suffering a hard-fought loss to Hampton's Ange-Kevin Koua in his second match against a Division I opponent.
Next, Strause took on the championship bracket at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Fredericksburg, Va. and advanced to the Round of 16. He disposed of Stevens' A. Kulakarni Prachet in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) before also cruising to a straight-set win over Hubert Parawa from Virginia Wesleyan (6-4, 6-3). The in Round of 16, Strause battled before Washington College's Karl Hoegstedt earned a 6-2, 6-4 win against the CNU senior.
Strause started the 2021-22 campaign ranked No. 19 in the nation in singles play and has been consistently ranked in doubles action throughout his career. He and the rest of the Captains will open the spring season against Virginia Wesleyan on February 4, 2023 at home with match time set for 2:30 p.m.
