LANSING, Mich. -- Putting a punctuation mark on an award-winning 2022 campaign,
Madi Rawlings and
Daniel Ferrante wrapped up the fall season by representing the Christopher Newport cross country program at the NCAA National Championships on Saturday morning at the Forest Akers Golf Course.
In the men's 8k, Ferrante clocked in at 26:33.5, while Rawlings added a 26:00.1 mark in the women's 6k. Saturday marked just the seventh time in school history that the Captains had competitors in both races at the NCAA Championships.
Kicking off the day in the 6k, Rawlings placed 290th in a field featuring the top runners in the country. The Suffolk, Virginia native traversed the course in 26:00.1. That marked Christopher Newport's fastest 6k clocking at the national meet by an underclassman since 2014.
In addition to her showing at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Rawlings previously secured All-Region accolades and was a first-team All-Conference selection for her work during her junior campaign.
Meanwhile, in the 8k, Ferrante finished 187th during the national meet. The junior star completed the race in 26:33.5, which marked the fastest clocking by an underclassman at Christopher Newport since Cav McGaw posted a 25:49.17 mark in 2017.
Ferrante's appearance at the NCAA Championships capped off a successful campaign for the Sterling, Virginia native. He was previously celebrated as an All-Region performer while hauling in first-team All-League accolades. Additionally, his 24:32.2 clocking at the conference championships marked the fifth-fastest 8k time in program history.
