NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After recording her first double-double of the season, Christopher Newport senior forward
Anaya Simmons (Williamsburg, Va.) has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Simmons helped lead nationally-ranked Christopher Newport to a 96-28 win over Lynchburg in their only matchup this week.
Simmons put together one of the most impressive performances of her career in just 16 minutes played on Sunday, scoring 20 points with 13 rebounds to lead the Captains dominant overall effort. Simmons did the bulk of her work in 13 first-half minutes with 13 points and 11 rebounds, securing a double-double after just two quarters. She then added a tremendous burst in the first three minutes of the second half, filling the stat sheet with seven more points and two rebounds to finish with a career-high tying 13 boards in the game.
The game was her ninth career 20-point game and the first for Simmons this season. She finished the game 8-of-12 from the floor and added a perfect 4-for-4 in trips to the free-throw line. The 2021-22 statistical champion for field-goal percentage has knocked down 13 of her last 18 shots and raised her 2022-23 mark to 61 percent (25-41). Simmons currently ranks second among active Division III players in career FG%; she is just 105 made field goals shy of qualifying for the NCAA career record book, where she currently ranks in the top-20 all-time in Division III.
Stuffing the stat sheet, Simmons added two assists, three steals, and one block. She leads the Captains in scoring and rebounding so far this season.
Christopher Newport will return to action this week with a pair of road games. The Captains will travel to undefeated Bridgewater College (5-0) on Wednesday, November 30 for a 6:00 pm tip.
