LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Max Wayne was named a first-team Preseason All-American by both
Inside Lacrosse and the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, while
Brady Altobello,
Andrew Cook,
Phoenix Hines, and
Dylan Rice also secured national plaudits as the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse program continued to stockpile awards heading into the 2022 season.
Along with Wayne's accolades, Hines and Rice earned second-team nods from both organizations on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Altobello was a second-team honoree by USILA and a third-team selection by
Inside Lacrosse. Rounding out the national honorees, Cook secured honorable mention recognition from
Inside Lacrosse.
In addition to Tuesday's awards, Altobello, Hines, Rice, and Wayne were previously celebrated as Preseason All-Americans by
USA Lacrosse Magazine last month.
Wayne enters the year as one of the nation's most decorated defensive standouts. He already boasts four All-American awards and was celebrated as the 2022
USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Defenseman of the Year. Coming into the season, he ranks second in program history with 124 takeaways, while his 64 career starts are tied for the most by a Captain.
Last year, Wayne ranked 24th in the nation with 30 caused turnovers while registering at least one in 16 of his 19 appearances. The Ashburn, Virginia native also became the first Captain to earn All-American nods from two different organizations in the same year after securing national accolades from both USILA and
USA Lacrosse Magazine.
One of the country's leading midfielders, Altobello picked up All-Conference, All-State, All-Region, and All-American awards for his work as a junior in 2021. In his first three seasons, he has already produced 79 goals and 120 points, which both rank eighth in school history. Meanwhile, his 13 game-winning strikes stand sixth on the program's all-time list.
During the 2021 campaign, Altobello established a new school record for goals by a midfielder after depositing 42 strikes during the year. Eight of his goals came on the man-up unit, which ranked 12th in the NCAA. Overall, the Potomac, Maryland native collected at least one point in all 19 games and notched seven hat-tricks, including one in the Final Four against No. 2 Salisbury.
A lethal force as a long-stick midfielder, Hines has tormented the opposition since arriving in Newport News in 2018. A two-time All-American, he ranks first in program history with 131 career caused turnovers. Additionally, his 165 ground balls place him seventh on the all-time charts, while his 64 appearances rank ninth.
Continuing his decorated career in 2021, Hines registered 32 takeaways, which ranked 18th in the NCAA and fourth among long-stick specialists. That total also placed him fifth on the school's all-time charts. Overall, the Ashburn, Virginia native caused at least one turnover in 15 of his 19 appearances while posting a pair in each of the first two games during the NCAA Tournament.
Shattering the program's offensive records, Rice enters 2022 as the all-time leader with 234 points, 172 goals, and 21 man-up strikes. His 62 assists also stand third all-time. For his work with the Captains, he is already a three-time All-American, four-time All-State selection, and the reigning Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Last year, Rice led Christopher Newport with 49 goals, which also marked the fourth-highest total in program history. A consistent threat, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native had at least one point in all 19 games, including a 10-point eruption against St. Mary's (Md.) on May 1. That established a new single-game school record.
Rounding out the honorees, Cook made history with his selection to the
Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American Team. A transfer from the University of Richmond, he is the first student-athlete in Christopher Newport athletics history to earn a Preseason All-American citation before ever suiting up for the Captains.
Prior to his arrival in Newport News, Cook spent two seasons with the Division I Spiders and appeared in 11 games, including five bouts against nationally-ranked competition. Meanwhile, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native earned a pair of All-American awards at Atlee High School and was named the Regional Player of the Year during his junior and senior campaigns.
The Captains will open up the 2022 season on February 12 when the team hosts Roanoke at 1 p.m.
