VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Starring in the pole vault,
Jack Armel placed second overall in a field littered with Division I competitors, while
Daniel Fox and
Alyssa Roach also competed for the Christopher Newport track & field teams on Saturday afternoon during the Kenneth Giles Invitational at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
In the pole vault, Armel faced off against six Division I standouts and eventually finished as the runner-up after eclipsing 4.10 meters. During the indoor season, Armel has now competed in the pole vault three times. He finished as the top Division III competitor at every meet, including victories during the Holiday Open and Keydet Invitational.
"Getting a chance to capitalize on a cue from the heptathlon, Jack's clearance at 4.10 meters was sky high, but he got a little tight trying to repeat it at the next height," said head coach
Tyler Wingard.
Meanwhile, on the track, Fox and Roach attempted to find some rhythm after Fox missed a little time over the last month, while Roach was slowed during her training in the fall. Shaking off some rust, Fox posted a time of 7.45 in the 60, while Roach completed the 60-hurdles in 11.16 and took part in the high jump as well.
"It was Daniel's first opportunity to race following his injury after posting a 6.94 mark last month," said Wingard. "He just needed to get through the nerves and reach the finish line in one piece, so we were able to get that done. Meanwhile, Alyssa had some good workouts over the hurdles but had a misstep in the race. Her high jump also started 90 minutes late, and the opening height was nearly raised to her PR. She had three good attempts, but there was no margin for error or any opportunity for her to get into a rhythm."
Christopher Newport will return to action on February 18 for the start of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, which will be hosted at the Freeman Center.
