Sondra Fan, Bill Broderick Named Player & Coach of the Year as Record Three Captains Haul in D3hoops.com All-Region Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a record-breaking season, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team made history on Tuesday with a program-best three All-Region selections as determined by D3hoops.com. Senior guard Sondra Fan (Poquoson, Va.) became just the second player in program history to net Region Player of the Year honors while head coach Bill Broderick was named the Region 6 Coach of the Year. Marking the first time in program history that more than one player was designated All-Region in a single year, Fan was joined by second team All-Region pick Anaya Simmons and third team selection Natalie Terwilliger

Fan continues to add to her illustrious career after joining Chelsie Schweers as the only Captains to earn Region Player of the Year honors in the 21 years it has been bestowed by D3hoops.com. She also becomes the sixth different CNU player to garner All-Region recognition more than once in her career. Broderick earns his second Region Coach of the Year plaque after picking up his first in the 2016-17 season.

The Captains' senior guard from Poquoson, Va. earned the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year title after leading CNU on both ends of the floor all season long. Fan had a career-year from beyond the arc, ranking fifth nationally in three-point field goal percentage by knocking down 43.5 percent of her shots from long range. She was the team's leading scorer, averaging 14.7 points per game despite playing just over 20 minutes per contest in Christopher Newport's deep rotation. She also ranked first on the team in steals (61) and third in assists (56) while knocking down 50 percent of her shots from the field.

Fan led the team in scoring in 13 games this season and registered seven 20+ point performances including a season-high 25 points in the Captains' Sweet 16 matchup against No. 10 Trinity (Texas).

After earning Region Rookie of the Years in 2020, junior Anaya Simmons backed up her fantastic freshman campaign with a sensational junior year in 2021-22. The Division III national statistical champion in field-goal percentage, Simmons knocked down 64.1 percent of her shots this season to help lead the Captains to the third-highest team FG% in the nation. Simmons averaged 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, ranking second on the team in both categories.

Simmons also ranked second on the team in steals and blocked shots with 53 and 20, respectively. She was named a first team All-Conference selection and earned C2C Tournament MVP honors.

Terwilliger rounds out the Captains All-Region selections in 2022 after rounding out her career with another exceptional campaign. She finished the year averaging 10.4 points per game while leading the team in rebounding with 6.5 per contest. Terwilliger blocked a career-high 45 shots and moved into the top-ten all-time at Christopher Newport with 118 rejections. The dangerous front court presence for the Captains scored in double figures 11 times including a dominant 25-point, 16-rebound performance against Salisbury on February 19. She was recognized as a D3hoops.com National Team of the Week player following that effort.

The Alexandria, Va. native earned first team All-Conference plaudits in her senior season.

Rounding out the honors for Christopher Newport was head coach Bill Broderick's selection as Region Coach of the Year. Guiding the Captains to the No. 1 overall ranking for the first time in program history, Broderick coached the Captains into the Round of 16 in the 2021-22 NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season. Christopher Newport piled up a 43-game winning streak and won the team's third consecutive conference championship. He balanced one of the top offenses in program history with the usual dominant defense to rank second nationally in scoring margin, second in turnover margin, and third in field-goal percentage.
