HAMPTON, Va. -- Hosting the Hanbury Trophy for the first time under head coach Dreugh Philips, the Captains sailing team took second place out of nine teams at the event this weekend. The regatta was shortened to 14 races with strong winds limiting the action on Saturday, but the Captains trailed only Navy at the end of the event.
On Saturday, the fleet raced four times before the wind gusts mounted into the 40 mph range and halted sailing for the day. The teams returned to Youth Sailing Virginia on Sunday and completed ten races on an action-filled final day.
The sailing was held in a combined format with all 18 boats racing at the same time rather than in a rotating A/B format. Christopher Newport finished fifth and eighth overall, including a tie for 4th in points with one of the Navy teams.
Daniel Hodges paired with
Liam Orr for the A division finish at 84 points, dropping to fifth on a tiebreaker against the Midshipmen. The B division boat finished with 121 points as
David Grace and
Ellie McFall took the water for the Captains.
Both pairings picked up a pair of bullets in the 14-race event, but it was the A division tandem that had a more consistent outing. Hodges and Orr finished outside the top-ten only twice in 14 races and averaged a sixth-place showing overall. McFall and Grace added seven more top tens to help CNU finish as runner-up in the event.
Christopher Newport will stay in the 757 for their next event as they travel to the William & Mary Spring Open in Williamsburg on April 2-3.
