FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Earning recognition for their work on the track and in the classroom,
Adrianna DeSantis and
Eric Speeney swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, while Christopher Newport also hauled in the Men's and Women's Coaching Staff of the Year awards following an incredible 2021-22 campaign.
The academic honor marked the first for both DeSantis and Speeney. Meanwhile, the coaching staff picked up its fifth men's award and fourth women's accolade since joining the conference in 2013-14.
Piecing together a sensational senior campaign, DeSantis was a dominant force in the sprints throughout the winter season. The fourth-year phenom ranked first in the league in both the 200 (26.86) and 400 (59.58). She also slotted second among conference competitors with a time of 8.06 in the 60.
During the indoor season, DeSantis was a two-time Coast-to-Coast Conference Track Athlete of the Week honoree after receiving the award on February 1 and February 7. The Mohegan Lake, New York native also earned All-League honors for her work on the Distance Medley Relay and wrapped up the year ranked sixth in the South Region in the 400.
Equally successful in the classroom, the neuroscience major is a perennial Academic All-Conference honoree and received CoSIDA Academic All-District nods for her scholarly endeavors in 2021.
Starring in the distance events, Speeney pieced together a decorated campaign in the 5,000. During the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, the Gainesville, Virginia native threw down a time of 15:40.04 in the event, which placed him second in a field and earned him All-League laurels.
Along with his award-winning performance in the 5,000, Speeney also established new PRs in both the 3000 (9:03.46) and mile (4:30.80) during the winter season. Both of those clockings placed him among the top-50 in the South Region, while he also slotted 16th in the area in the 5,000.
In addition to his starring role on the track, Speeney earned All-Conference and All-Region honors during the cross country campaign. Meanwhile, the electrical engineering major was also named to the USTFCCCA National All-Academic Cross Country Team in 2019 and 2021.
While DeSantis and Speeney collected individual accolades for their work in the winter, the entire Christopher Newport coaching staff was celebrated for its performance during the indoor campaign. Led by head coach
Tyler Wingard, the Captains swept the team titles during Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships while producing 13 individual champions and 21 All-Region performers.
