WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will make one final push for qualifying marks to next week's NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon when the Captains take part in the South Region Final Qualifier at Shenandoah's Wilkins Athletics & Events Center.
Saturday's meet will be the final competition before the NCAA Championships begin on March 11 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The top-20 declared student-athletes in each individual event will earn a spot at the national meet, while the top-12 relays will also advance to the competition.

Christopher Newport currently has 14 competitors scheduled to take part in the Final Qualifier this weekend. Among those looking to earn a bid to the national meet,
Alyssa Roach enters the weekend tied for 19th in the NCAA in the pentathlon (3,157 points) and 33rd in the 60-hurdles (9.07). Meanwhile, on the men's side,
CJ Reeders is 40th in the triple jump (14.02 meters), while
Daniel Fox is 50th in the 60 (6.94).
Along with the nationally-ranked standouts, several other Captains will look to throw down qualifying marks on Saturday. Christopher Newport will be well-represented in the distance events as
Clark Edwards,
Daniel Ferrante,
Nathanael Ferrante,
Luke Miller,
Eric Speeney,
Nick Tolarchyk, and
John Vogel are all entered in at least one event for the men. Additionally,
Kaitlyn Ardrey,
Logan Funk, and
Logan Warden are scheduled to run in the women's 3,000.
Rounding out the squad's entries,
Jack Armel will set his sights on the men's pole vault, which begins at 12:50 p.m.
In addition to the pole vault, the pentathlon is scheduled to start at 1:35 p.m., while the men's triple jump begins five minutes later. Meanwhile, on the track, Fox will head out for the 60 at 2:30 p.m., and the men's mile opens the distance events at 3:00 p.m.
Following Saturday's action, a final list of the National Championship participants will be available on the NCAA's website by 7 p.m. on Sunday.
